Carlos Alcaraz: I’d Be Lying If I Said The Money Didn’t Matter At The Six Kings Slam

Jannik Sinner won the the Six Kings Slam title but he flubbed the answer to the question of playing the event, saying “I don’t play for money,” after taking the richest purse in tennis history of $6,000,000 for just two matches plus another $1,500,000 just to show up.

Alcaraz, who lost to Sinner in the Riyadh final on Saturday, wouldn’t dismiss the real reason everyone went: Money. Novak Djokovic, Rafael Nadal, Holger Rune, and Daniil Medvedev also collected.

“If I say, I mean, I went there just for fun or to play and forget the money, I’m gonna lie,” Alcaraz said Monday at the Paris masters. “Every person work for that, as well. You know, that’s how life is about.

“I love playing tennis,” he said. “Most of the time I don’t think about the money. I just play for love or for fun. But you have to be realistic. You have to think that you want to earn money, you know, and that’s it. You know, in Arabia is the most highest prize money ever in the history, so that was a good motivation, at least for me.”

Alcaraz will open play Tuesday in Paris where he’s never made the semifinals in three previous trips.

“I haven’t played good tennis here in this tournament. Probably at the end of the year, I have been tired, or yeah, as I said last year, I had to understand that the season is still going after September,” Alcaraz said.

“And I think I did prepare really well this year. So I don’t know, you know. The calendar is super tight, super demanding, as well. So coming to the last tournament of the year, probably I have been tired the last year, didn’t play as well as I wanted, but coming to this year, I think I’m feeling different.

“I know what I have to do. I have been doing great work lately. So I think I’m ready to do good results or at least go farther than last year, that I think is not really difficult.”

Justus Says:

About The Six Kings Human Rights Violations Sportswashing Slam Cup in Riyad: where are the critical tennis journalists? Why let Sinner get away with “I don’t play for money. It was a nice event, the first time I went to Riyad” and Alcaraz (less hypocritical) with “in Arabia is the most highest prize money ever in the history- by the way:Sinner got 7,5 million dollars for 2 matches including showing up money -, so that was a good motivation at least for me”.
Sinner and Alcaraz are still young, but not too young to know and understand that they were bought and bribed by a despicable medieval and autocratic regime to show up in a rather disgusting sportswashing event. One that suits a range of similar attempts to glorify this villain state by bribing with huge amounts (a billions dollars program) famous western top athletes, artists and corrupt directors of sports associations. And hosting glittering events. Like Amnesty International has been reporting for many years, all to divert attention from the horrific continuing violations of all sorts of basic human rights there. And to make the world believe that Saudi Arabia is nowadays a modern country with respectable norms and values.
I call on all tennis journalists to ask especially Sinner and Alcaraz the right and relevant critical questions about the foregoing in the next press conferences. To start with the ATP final in Turin. And to promote that this dubious Saudian event – provided that it will be organized again in the next future – will be designated by the free press as mentioned in the the beginning of this comment

PK Says:

Justus makes an excellent point about the ongoing sports-washing efforts by Saudi Arabia. And the tennis timorous journalists asking softball questions.

The athletes, yes, the top names earn unbelievable amounts of money, often from dubious sources. but I don’t see players abstaining from the recurring money grabs throughout the year. Sinner’s comment that he does not do these events for the money sounds hollow.

Perhaps figure out a more equitable distribution of the wealth chasing the sport? Sounds naive, I know, it’s the top stars that attract the attention (and money).

the_mind_reels Says:

I was kind of hoping that one of these young guys would go there, win a pile of cash, and then turn around and donate it to a cause that would ruffle some Saudi feathers (you know, like women’s/girl’s education or something like that). Alas…

Alison hodge Says:

Oh come on they are all doing it for the money, if they say any different then they are lying through their back teeth, let’s not kid ourselves otherwise

Wog Boy Says:

“Sinner’s comment that he does not do these events for the money sounds hollow.”

Not the first Sinner hollow comment, his explanation (and arrogance) of how he tested positive is even more hollow..but again, money talks.
This is coming from his former fan.

Wog Boy Says:

Rafa has legit excuse, as official Saudi Ambassador he has an obligation to participate.

I wouldn’t mind if Nole gave it a miss.

chrisford1 Says:

Justus is just using the typical demonization of other countries especially noticeable in American leaders, on Saudi Arabia..It is usually a prelude to the US starting another war to get the shekels for other peoples suffering in US fomented wars.
Demonization is bigoted and unacceptable.

Saudi Arabia is now in the hands of a reforming Crown Prince and a population that knows the modern world from travels and study and know that they want that modern world brought to KSA but not aspects of the East and West harmful to Saudi culture. They want visibility, they want infidel tourists now!! And these sports events giving them global attention and putting their people’s best face forward – and they can do with chump change!

chrisford1 Says:

Wogboy – Novak seemed to have a very good time and praised his hosts on Instagram. And ran photos of himself meeting Saudi teens at a large market, photobombing a fast food restaurant, posing by some unique architecture buildings many centuries old, and playing Lawrence of Arabia out in the desert by a salt pond, in Saudi attire.

I suspect at some point, Novak will return with family, as an honored guest. When retired, or another 1 or two Six Kings tournaments. We are talking a 1.5 million appearance fee to show. Plus Djokovic as you know, likes schmooze with to promote investment by those with ample government or private money to invest, in Serbia.

Okiegal Says:

It’s all about the money. If they it’s not about the mine….. liar liar pants on 🔥!! Agree, Alison, 110%!!

Okiegal Says:

Eeek…. I did not proof once again!! Should have said, if they say it’s not about the money……

Wog Boy Says:

Well, CF1, “nobody is perfect”, the quote from “Some Like It Hot”😉:

chrisford1 Says:

That was the slam down killer line at the end of that old classic movie of 65-70 years ago that made the careers of 5 or so actors made “stars” from this.
How freaking old are you? Or are you just an old soul the loves the classic best stuff?
And who, BTW, are you putting down to “nobody is perfect”? Rafa snuggling up to a sheikh wearing a blonde wig? Or Djokovic in the desert snuggling up to a tree in a Saudi wadi and chewing on tasty, nutritious gluten free resin extruding from the tree’s bark??

Alison hodge Says:

Wogboy that’s my favourite ever film I watch it every Christmas many thanks for sharing, I love that film 🤗🎄

CF1,

Not that old, but keep in mind that western movies start arriving in former Yugoslavia in the ‘60s, my mother loved going to cinema my father not so. He went once with my mother after his work and after he stopped with his mates for a few drinks on the way home. “Ivanhoe” was huge happening in those days, after 10 minutes of watching my father went to bathroom and never returned, as the movie finished and people were walking out my mother noticed that everyone is looking at the last row of the seats and giggles, sure enough, it was my father laying across the the seats fast asleep, my mother was so embarrassed and upset that she walked out pretending she has nothing to do with that young man.

Since then, since it was inappropriate for married woman to go alone to cinema she was dragging me all the time…as a protection😉

chrisford1 Says:

Good story WB. I am sure you have many, as you moved around after living in a socially conservative land back when that was a bad word and the belief was Western Culture was the best. When we were not groveling in Marxist guilt over centuries old racial matters and colonial “oppressions”.
Now the decline in the West is noticable and the fascism of the Left emerging on censorship, making certain thoughts or expressing them illegal, and authoritarian mandates from State or Federal authorities abusing their executive ppowers.
And perhaps the tumultuous times you saw in Serbia make you better prepared in a way if things go shitty in the West on a level few Westerners can comprehend. Americans panic if they can’t get their avocados, if their internet provider goes down.

Send you an OT follow-up, because I did a double major between engineering and history, and I like a lot of old stuff.
Old WW1 history compilation of stories by the survivors of the battles, all from the same British regiment with maps and data and aerial photos added. 4 volumes and I’m finishing #2 after 9 months of off and on. And now watching a MIT documentary of the engineers at Honeywell building the computer and astronavigation equipment needed to do ultraexact mission rocket corrections to do trajectory and account for lunar gravitons, and the 134,000 commands and monitoring to run and ensure equipment was within parameters. The thing had less processing power than a 1970s pocket calculator, but was total brilliance.
I’ll cut this off and link two vids off Youtube. Sean seems to allow only one per post. For your enjoyment and others….

chrisford1 Says:

Sometimes even a song opens up a world you never expected when you look deeper.
“Fireball XL5”. I followed the great song and found a crazy world of “Supermarionette” puppets patrolling the Universe. It’s like a sort of Jetsons, great ideas with things that we now see as obviously hokey, but people 60 years ago.

The song is killer! The singer is Australian Don Spencer, who was doing backup vocals for The Stones&MaryAnne Faithful at the time. He then got into producing and performing children’s music and education. His shows ran 20 years in Australia and the UK.
Funny, he got his gold and platinum albums from sales of kids music and vids..not his pop music years. Though “Fireball” charted in the Top 30 in the UK.

CF1,
Congratulations on old/new President👏

Whatever they think about President Trump you can’t but admire him for what he achieved after all what he has to endure in the last 4 years.

The clear and convincing winner, buy popular vote and electorate.

Wog Boy Says:

^^^^^Looks like a bloodbath to me, deservedly so, not even Taylor Swift could help Kamala and the other losers 👊

Van Persie Says:

A bit late to the party!

What an Year!

Nole won finaly the Gold Medal this Year but I have to say, Trump’s victory made me even happier. I am really sure he will fix some thibgs for the entire world, not only for America. He is a smart guy!

I really do not even want to think about, how things would have been, had the Neocons won another election!

Well done, America! Good choice!

Wog Boy Says:

“Neocons” 👍
