@Ben…..you’ve been a tennis buff for a long time, has there been a point spread as big as this one ever? Just curious….too lazy to do the research.

And some thougts they are! Apparently Guillermo is truly impressed with Novak. Much more meaningful when these praises come from former top players and not from tennis journalists most of whom are corporate puppets with predetermined agenda and tennis narrative!

*Andy finally finishing #2 is attributable to him stopping to suck on clay.
* Dunno why TennisX staff frames the Djokovic max points as the most “unadjusted points” and with todays ranking methodology. Adjust the points, use the same rules of ranking and Djokovic STILL has the Open ERa records for most points at any time (16,850) and the most end of season points (16,585)
*Ferru was injured a good part of the year, then fought like hell to make it to London. And he did. Because David Ferrer is a stud and a pro’s pro.
*Congrats to Gasquet who is having a late Renaissance. Not an all-time great, but truly honoring his talent the last few years.
*Roger Federer joins Novak in the assault on numerous records. He is closing in on Connors and somewhat Lendl’s “longtime career at the top” records driven by rankings. Look at ATP records and where Fed is in several categories and you see the history he is making.
*The consistency in rankings, wins on various surfaces drive Novak and Fed to being in the Top 10, even Top 5 in most ATP record listings for this or that.
*Rafa is such a major competitive foe that even in his awful year, he was strong enough to finish #5 in rankings. Impressive!
*Rankings 11 through 20 show some new guys making it there – and a few in that next cohort of ten have to be considered as possibilities to make Top 10 in 2016 or shortly after that. Kevin Anderson. Dominic Thiem. Goffin. Paire. Even that sad sack of you know what, Tomic.

maybe that’s a sign that these guys will be the young up-and-comers? by comparison 2 of those others listed from 2007, cilic and delpo, managed to win a slam.

MY candidate for top match is Nadal-Fognini 4th Rd USO. No doubt at all. Creme de la creme.

2. GAsquet vs. Wawrinka Wimbledon QFs.

3. Murray and Djokovic semis at the French Open.

4. Fed Murray Wimbledon semi

5. USO Djokovic vs. Federer and the drunk US crowd Final

There aint any Big 4. Just Big 1.

2016 seems to be Djoke’s for the taking. The only “youngish” player in the top 10 is Nishikori – and he can’t maintain the fitness needed at that level. All others in the top 10 are Djoke’s pigeons now.

Amongst the next 10 – Raonic? Nah, he is basically a taller Dimitrov. Goffin? Showed in the davis cup finals that he doesn’t have the goods – if he can’t even make it competitive with Murray on clay on home ground. Tomic? Safin with less firepower and even less discipline. Paire? Might, or is he just another tall guy?

Can’t see any of these winning a slam in 2016. Djoke should have a field day taking those H2Hs to a new level, winning the French, the Olympics, and pretty much eclipsing Nadal. Fed seems content with his bridesmaid role, which should continue this last year. A slower 30 year old Nadal is not really a fearsome player any more. And Murray is of course Murray.

Djoke has a real change of really eclipsing most of Fed’s important records – slams, weeks at No 1, YEC titles.

No doubt in the last 45 years Nadal’s 2010 season ranks as one of the standout ones in the Open Era – just short, though, of being in the general discussion of the best season ever. Just a tiny notch under being in a class with Lavers Grand Slam year or the utter dominant years Federer had in 2006, Djokovic had in 2015.
Easily in the list of the 10 best years a pro player ever had though.
It may be looked back on as Peak Nadal. Had he been able to physically sustain that serve he had that year…who knows how the “close ones” he had with Nole 2.0 in 2011 and 2012 would have turned out???

But that was then, this is now. Nadal fans should be very encouraged how Rafa took adversity on like a true champion does, how close some of his losses were, and how he did in the fall season, normally Rafa’s worst part of the year.
I know he will be in the mix in 2016. It will be tough, given how Andy and Nole have further elevated their games and Fed may be in a better position to give a go at Rafa in a very long time..but I believe Nadal fans will have some more fine matches to savor in the coming year. Rafa is not “done”, by any means. The Big 4 continues on, with a couple players like Stan around to demonstrate they are not the only 4 that matter.

agree ben; it was a great season but not the best. nadal had less top 10 wins that fed had in 2006, which was 19. i think nadal had 11 top 10 wins from playing top 10 opponents 16 times in 2010. that’s rather amazing considering he won 3 slams.

this list ranks it below his 2008 and 2013 years, not that i am saying it’s accurate. but in 2010 rafa retired injured from AO, for example. he also won only 3 masters. in 2008 he was more consistent, and in 2013 he ha more difficult competition, but he didn’t play AO that year and lost 1st or 2nd round at wimbledon. so it’s probably between 2008 or 2010 for nadal’s best year. personally i think it was 2008 because he also won the olympics and his performance at the FO that year was outrageously good.

Rafa won RG and W,and Olympic gold on 3 different surfaces in 2008,and GS on 3 different surfaces in 2010,i would say 2010 was the best as it was 3 GS,but thats JMO….

2013, 2006, 2011 were equally good for different reasons.

Laver’s Grand Slam years are apples and oranges compared to today’s game (not to mention that three slams were on grass).

i like 2008 the best gypsy, but can see why you would pick 2010. for me, 2008 rafa was consistently great throughout the season. he dominated at the FO in what was probably one of if not the most dominate performance i’ve ever seen at a slam, but then he followed that up with an epic win over Fed at wimbledon and olympic gold later. he came really close to reaching the finals at the USO that year too. but i remember the semi versus andy was played in bad weather and over 2 days. had he reached the finals, who knows? but 2010 he won 3 slams so i can see where you’re coming from.

btw that tweet – not sure if you read it – said rafa’s 2010 was the best season since laver’s 1969.

It makes a lively discussion, Gypsy. Arranging years in a list and claiming one or another as “best ever” is a nice past-time in sports. Arguments can be made to appear solidly backed by data – but don’t be fooled. Over time, it comes down to an opinion and memory.

Favorite years: 2005, 2006, 2009, 2011, 2015. Marat v Fed AO 2005 – awesome. Memories play the biggest part – hippocampus heavily influenced by amygdala. :D

I think Nadal played his best tennis in 2013. His level was insane. Although 2008 FO was the single most dominant slam performance probably ever. I mean the guy has had some pretty great seasons, no question. But what sets Djokovic’s and Federer’s years apart is the overall dominance. Federer’s worst loss in 06 was to Murray in 3rd round of Cincy. Djokovic’s worst loss in 15 was to Karlovic in the QFs of Doha. Nadal always had a handful of head scratching losses in his 3 best years.

jalep, not conveniently. i sincerely didnt think of fed’s illness when i was thinking of how well rafa played in 2008. i was just thinking of rafa’s 3 best years and what he accomplished in them since that is what the tweet prompted.

agree about marat/fed. a great match and a safin highpoint. maybe THE safin highpoint, although his speech after beating leyton in the final was nice too.

Jane, I’m not so sure about that. His level on clay in 2010 was freaking insane, too. Just look at MC that year. Bagels and bread sticks for everyone! It’s definitely close. But I’d agree in putting them above 2013.

Believe you’d forget about the mono. The joke was in how much memory and emotion play in perception and recollection. Sometimes when I read h2h’s I see the stories that went along with the matches. Every match has at least two personal sides, or for example – the blue clay of Madrid has it’s own narrative.

I wonder how those “lovebirds” get along when alone?? They are both so high tempered I’ll bet the feathers fly when they have a tiff……. He cracks me up when he gets fired up over a call….I can’t help laughing. I like to watch him however. In those matches where he beat Rafa he was so good….whycan’t he play like that all time?? I guess playing Rafa puts him in “beast mode”. The matches were entertaining……but I hate when he’s slated to play Rafa…makes me nervous!

Oops, RZ, I got my wires cross….got my ladies mixed up. I was thinking his girl was the one who won USO this year. I love Flavia. My mind wondered off again! She seems very nice. So nice that I have wondered about them as a couple. I’m sorry about that post……wish there was a way I could delete it. I’m sure all of the hot headed players are totally differnt individuals off the court. Tension,
bad calls and pressure could probably bring the worst out of a player. Heck, Berdy and Soderling may be super nice guys off of the court. Bottom line, I shouldn’t be judging people I really don’t even know…. That would be a good New Years resolution!!

^ BTW Okie, I realized I’ve gone back and forth on the notion of Flavia being a hothead. I thought Vinci was the hothead I saw at an L.A. tournament a few years ago but turns out that Vinci didn’t play that tournament. It was definitely an Italian I saw get angry at a ball girl for not putting the towel in the right place so it was either Penetta or Schiavone as they were the only Italians in that tournament. So it’s possible that I was the one getting the ladies mixed up and then got you confused.
