Andy Murray upped his win streak to 27 Thursday after edging Nicolas Almagro 7-6(4), 7-5 in the quarterfinals at Doha.

On a windy day, Murray was broken in his first service game before recovering. The two traded early breaks in the second. Murray sealed the win breaking Almagro with the Spaniard serving 5-6.

“Tough, tough conditions for everyone today, Murray said. “It was obviously very windy and it was blowing kind of across the court a lot. That makes timing pretty difficult. So it was hard for everyone today. Cold as well so that the court is pretty dead. You’re not really getting much off the surface.

“He is also a shot-maker. He goes big. He takes chances. Yeah, made it tough for me. I could have maybe made it a bit easier on myself if I converted a few more break point chances, but got through it in the end.”

Murray, who won Doha in 2008 and 2009, advanced to face Tomas Berdych Saturday in the semifinals. The Czech bested Jo-Wilfried Tsonga 7-5, 6-3.

“It’s great for me to get another match like that against a top player in the first week of the year,” Murray added.

Murray holds the 10-6 edge on Berdych winning their last six since 2013 Cincinnati.

In the other semifinal, defending champion Novak Djokovic will take on Fernando Verdasco. Djokovic routed Radek Stepanek 6-3, 6-3 while Verdasco ousted Ivo Karlovic 6-2, 7-5.

Djokovic leads 8-4 against the Spaniard winning most recently in Doha a year ago.

“I saw him play against Goffin a bit more, and he played really solid, really impressive tennis, better than — he’s been playing better than last year when we encountered each other in the second round,” Djokovic said. “He’s a very complete player. He’s got weapons from forehand side; big serve; very strong.”

“If he’s feeling good on the given day, he can really challenge any player on any surface. That’s how I see him. We have always been aware of his potential and his talent. Just that he wasn’t able to keep things consistent throughout his career.”

el_matador Says:

holly molly..seems nole still has a lot of “passion” left

Willow Says:

This match will haunt Dasco i feel after all those MPs that came and went ….

el_matador Says:

another great comeback win for nole.
as for verdasco- “everything remains as it never was”

RZ Says:

Djokovic surviving his match against Verdasco is probably the start of his comeback (not that he went too far away). Players who survive match points tend to go on and play great for a while.

Willow Says:

Novak is an amazing player, that will probably go on to be the best ever, and is an lovely guy off court, but i just cant get on with his on court persona, and all that gesticulating to the crowd, sorry folks heckle me if you want dont care ;-) ….

J.S. Says:

I agree WILLOW!!! Can’t stand the bowing to all 4 sides of the crowd after his wins, maybe his guru taught him to “hug” them? The clapping of the racket and gesturing to clap when he wins big points….NOT A FAN of his. Maybe he will stop so I can start to like watching him but for now NO THANKS!

BUT I am bitter betty today after MY Rafa lost. I have tickets for Rotterdam and Monte Carlo so keeping fingers crossed I get to see him win many matches. Come on Nadal!

PEACE and I am hackling with you :)

Willow Says:

J.S But what hes done and is continuing to do in tennis is amazing i will say that, and yes i will also admit to being bitter because Nadal lost ;-)

Willow Says:

And ive no qualms what-so-ever on about him surpassing any of Nadals records, winning 30 GS, 50 Masters, 12 FO etc, im not fixated with records just the man ;-)….

J.S. Says:

Willow….
No doubt he is a great player – Just hard to watch with the antics. Trying to like him but the unnecessary show boating seem to be escalated lately.

Think Rafa will do well in AO?

Willow Says:

J.S I Dont know, id like to think so, but i will try to remain positive, its too early in the year to draw any conclusions yet though, lets see what impact Moya has on him ….

Willow Says:

BTW Nice to see another Nadal fan here ….

J.S. Says:

Maya could have helped Rafa today since he knows Milos well….Did you see Raonic meditating on changeovers? He seems really focused on staying in the zone, give him credit BUT DAMN IT! haha

I still don’t think Milos moves as well as Rafa, his serve is really powerful but boring to watch!

J.S. Says:

Of course Rafa gives a great post match interview….so gracious and accepting of his defeat!
Love the part about small margins! CHAMPION

Truth Says:

Maybe Nole is flailing his arms and pretending to be the biotch guru because there’s no one pushing him to try harder, his huggy brother is annoying, and he believes he needs some fans to comfort him.
No one tells him to get off the court already after winning.
People fear him, don’t discipline him and won’t stop him from pretending to be a freaking sycophant.
It’s a big issue, enough to affect his career.
Take a $150 million away from him and see how “damn happy” he is on court.

The match doesn’t deserve loud cheap applause.
Saving 5 match pts. VS. Fern, who is known for choking and not winning masters/Slams.
Nole wouldn’t be playing this badly 7-24 months ago. That’s for sure.
Being so careless, nonchalant and satisfied.
He wants to play 1000s of tiebreaks. What a joke.

J.S. Says:

HAHA I LOVE ME SOME “TRUTH” – Funny I saw the crowd all leave before his “blessings” unlike Federer and Nadal fans who grasp every last minute.

syc·o·phant
ˈsikəˌfant,ˈsikəfənt/
noun
a person who acts obsequiously toward someone important in order to gain advantage.
synonyms: yes-man, bootlicker, brown-noser, toady, lickspittle, flatterer, flunky, lackey, spaniel, doormat, stooge, cringer, suck, suck-up
“I thought you wanted a competent assistant, not a nodding sycophant”

Sorry, I had to help with the Noun description.

Huggy….Is that the new name for his guru? I thought he toyed with Ferndasco for fun, no?

Oh well I don’t go to tourney’s to watch him so not losing sleep. Just hope Rafa gets moving along 1st quarter so I haven’t wasted $$…..Love HIM, TEAM RAFA –
LOL you’re are funny and I like it! :)

J.S. Says:

If I can’t marry Rafa can I marry TRUTH???
LOL

RZ Says:

BTW, Merry Christmas to all who celebrate today or tomorrow!

Chrisford1 Says:

I’m still waiting for Novak’s bow to be taken up as a “show us your tits!!” exoration. I predict it is just a matter of time, if it hasn’t happened already. Indian Wells perfect stage. Just bring in 40-50 eager for their 15 minutes of fame…voluptuous bimbos on the arms of celebs or rich old guys. Wait….At least that many bimbos are there!
Bimbo to media cameras: “I thought the joko-something player was telling us to lift our tops.
“I shouldn’t have been thrown off the grounds for it.
“I was a featured zombie on Walking Dead S6 episode 3. I have had many other roles.

If it was done by many people, it could be a Wave happening at a Novak victory. Round the whole stadium. A Novak Wave.

Willow Says:

Never seen Walking Dead, the only thing that would appeal to me in that series would be Andrew Lincoln ….

J.S. Says:

CHRISFORD……LOL Not a good image but funny stuff!
I will never look at Novak’s “blessings” to crowds the same, TY for that image!

Chrisford1 Says:

1. The Rafa Milos game has been taken to me to be more about how dangerous Milos has become with his improved backhand and movement. Especially movement. I think Moya helped him. I think Ljubicic helped him. I think all those practices with a guy with top mobility and defense helped Raonic.
Most of all, what is between Milo’s ears is what is looking to become a solidifying, long term stay at #3 ranked.

2. Rafa had one of those games where he showed heart, he was in it, but a few small pieces have been missing. The problem is they have been for most part missing since the 2014 french Open.

3. Andy and his hitting partner before last round. Lots of stretching time. Light play, up to full battle, to light play and some cooldown. With horseplay all along except in full battle and even there, points to have some fun on, try a trick shot. I think both can do this because of who they are.

Yet another in the long, insidious campaign by this person to be crowned Tennis Parent of the Decade:

Emilia Says:

To “truth” and j.s. :

Nole – a sycophant? Are you kidding? Good you looked up the word. There is no need for him to be a sycophant as he is appreciated and loved by millions. One can not be loved by the whole world and Nole is intelligent enough to know that. With his appearance tennis is never monotonous and the show goes on. Nole is a born entertainer besides his talent. Take it or leave it but don’t be mean!

jane Says:

happy christmas eve to any novak fans who celebrate today/tomorrow.
crazy comeback by novak today saving 5 mps! fire must’ve been burning brightly somewhere. :)

The fire’s burning brighter than ever,
the straw is spread in front of the fire,
Christmas logs are laid on the fire crossways;
the rifles crack, and roasts on spits do turn,
the gusle plays, and the dancers sing,
grandfathers dance with their young grandchildren,
in the kolo join three generations,
it seems they’re almost of the same age;
everything is filled with bright mirth and joy.
But what I like best of all, so help me,
one has to drink a toast to everything![9]

Chrisford1 Says:

Emily – The Big 4 and peers is interesting in some of the things that make them stand out: ie. Novak and Rafa are true originals – and Gaels would be too if he was Top 4, Andy and Fed are the two most talented.
One can only hope Federer did not call Verdasco. And say “I know how it feels when Novak steals matches you have earned the win for.” “Si, gracias Amigo Roger.”
“Then again, I was so good Novak was lucky to have those narrow escapes and I never squandered 5 match points to him. “”

“Hello, Ferdando, still there.???

(3 of the 4 Top 4 are world class athletes. 3 clearly.)
(No dummies in the 4, though you can say which are brighter, I believe.)
(3 of the 4 are comedians. One dry and droll..One an inadvertent comic par excellence….one a goofy physical humor and mimicry talent.)
(1 of the 4 will be called “elegant” to his dying day.
One will be called “Sir!” to his end. Another “The Warrior”. And the last, “Mr. President”.)

theDA Says:

“Novak saves 5 MPs” is a slightly misleading quote to those who watched the match It’s more like FeVer botched or shanked 4 of them ;) Verdasco will always Verdasco.

lakie Says:

Don’t care who wins tomorrow. Sir Andy to win AO.

Margot Says:

Hi darling DA :) I see you have emerged from your cave for a few last moments of precious freedom in the sunshine before Chump is….shhh, you know what…;) Agree re FV too. Meanwhile:
