Gasquet, Djokovic Headline Friday in EstorilPosted on May 4, 2007 There are four seeds in the quarterfinals of the Estoril Open, led by No. 2 and 2005 finalist Tommy Robredo, No. 3 Novak Djokovic, No. 5 Richard Gasquet and No. 7 Agustin Calleri. In the first singles match on Centre Court, unseeded American Vincent Spadea takes on 20-year-old Richard Gasquet for the first time. The 32-year-old Spadea is the oldest player remaining and he’s appearing in his fifth ATP quarterfinal (or better) of the season. His best result was the semifinals in Delray Beach in February (l. to eventual champ Malisse). Gasquet is 20-8 on the season and he is also making his fifth ATP quarterfinal (or better) showing. His best result was the semifinals in Sydney (l. to Moya) in January. In the next match on Centre Court, Spaniard Guillermo Garcia-Lopez plays No. 3 Novak Djokovic for the second time. In their previous meeting at the second round of Wimbledon two years ago, the Serb came back from a two-sets deficit to win in five. Garcia-Lopez is making his second quarterfinal showing (Delray Beach) of the season. Djokovic leads the ATP circuit with a 28-6 match record and titles in Adelaide (d. Guccione) and ATP Masters Series Miami (d. Canas). He also was runner-up at AMS Indian Wells (l. to Nadal). The 19-year-old is ranked a career-high No. 5 this week. On Centralito Court, Frenchman Paul-Henri Mathieu brings in a seven-match winning streak into his first meeting with Argentine Juan Monaco. Mathieu is coming off his third career ATP title in Casablanca last Sunday and he enters with a 17-8 match record. Monaco captured his first ATP title in his hometown of Buenos Aires in February and he is 14-7 on the year. In the final quarterfinal, Agustin Calleri and Tommy Robredo meet for the seventh time (tied 3-3) and third this season (tied 1-1). The 30-year-old Calleri won in three sets last week in Barcelona after Robredo won 6-4, 6-0, in the semifinals of Auckland in January. Calleri is appearing in his fifth ATP quarterfinal (or better) this year. He comes in with a 14-7 match record. Robredo is also making his fifth quarterfinal or better and he is 18-9 on the season. |
