Roger Federer admitted fault in the recent controversy over his statements about Bernard Tomic. Following a very impressive win over Tomas Berdych Tuesday at the Australian Open on Tuesday, Federer said he was unaware that Tomic ranked as high as he did when he said the Australian had a long way to go to reach the Top 10.

“To be quite honest, when I walked out of the press room I thought I was somewhat tough, but at the same time I was fair because I said nice things about him,” Federer said. “But then I checked his ranking. I didn’t know his ranking was as high as it was, to be quite honest.

“I thought he was like 50 or 60 and he was top 20. That was my bad, to be honest. But I don’t check the rankings every day. I came from the off-season. I had no clue what was going on anymore. That was my bad.

“But I still believe it’s a big difference top 10 for a week or for a year or for multiple years, and getting there is not easy. It’s a lot of dedication, a lot of hard work. There’s a lot of guys who have the potential right now, not just him. That’s why I think it got brought up in many ways.”

Tomic stated at the start of the year that he wanted to crack the Top 10 fairly soon. Tomic made the fourth round at the Australian Open losing to Andy Murray Monday.

7 Comments for Roger Federer Admits Mistake In Assessing Bernard Tomic: “My Bad”

Chrisford1 Says:

Roger, the Maestro of the sly putdown and the backhanded compliment. Has to be, he is driven by a large ego.

madmax Says:

Do you know what Tom Gainey, talk about mis reporting and ChrisFord!, you are no better. Vultures. What have you got against Federer?

Things taken out of context but then that is the Art of journalism and the Art of discussions gone wrong. Let’s wait for the haters to hang onto these words.

Ridiculous. Best to read more reputable sites.

So Chris, this IS what was said:

(allegedly of course). To my mind, it is what is more believable, only the people who want to believe the worst will do so. What on earth would Federer have to gain by saying anything remotely against Tomic. Put your thinking cap on ChrisFord. What would he have to gain?

Nothing.

“I said a lot of things in Brisbane, you know,” Federer said Tuesday. “I guess only a small part got taken out of it. It’s a bit out of context, in my opinion. Then you feed it to a player, he reacts, might be frustrated, and then he goes even further.”

And this is what the Media do. ALL THE TIME. ‘Feed the player with the information they want in order to get a reaction. Let’s face it. Federer was spot on with Tomic and what he needs to do. Not only that, what the hell is Tomic doing even caring about Federer says or anyone else for that matter?

Tomic makes the point that he thinks Roger should have said this or that? Why?

Why would Tomic even care? I will tell you why, because he wants to be counted in Roger’s eyes, he wants to be heralded at the next player to break through and the problem is, Roger didn’t say that and so Tomic got the guns out.

He should just continue with trashing everyone on tour who is higher than him in rankings, better than him in style, better than him in class, Tomic is a disgrace in my view. A loose tongue.

It is very difficult to separate his talent from his personality, because he is such a baby.

Large Ego here, so far is CF1, hanging onto the bandwagon of Fed haters. No CF!, that isn’t a backhanded compliment. You take the biscuit.

It’s all so nasty when people want to believe these things about Roger.

He is the one person, who has always, always, given at least 2-3 hours of media time after a match, and asked ridiculous questions which are then twisted and turned, act as fodder for those people who want to pick at his personality and go even further to say that he doesn’t wish good things for all tennis players.

He so does and I think the problem is that fans of tennis (really?), just don’t want to believe he can be such a wonderful ambassador for tennis. He is just too good to be true, so they pick at the remains, the remnants and then blow them up out of all proportion.

We can all count on our fingers the times that Fed has lost it and over a 15 year career – well it’s absolutely amazing that he has kept his cool in these media rooms.

Pressed and pushed by the press, he has maintained a sense of professionalism and its only the jealous cats that are out to live on his every word and twist them to concur with their own thwarted and misplaced perspectives.

madmax Says:

So who thinks that Roger should follow Tomic’s career? Only Tomic!

Seriously. What a joke!

Newsflash! Roger has his own to concentrate on Bernie!

“You know, I’d like to see anybody succeed and anybody make their move,” Federer said. “Especially to top 100 first, top 10, world No. 1. If everybody could be that, I wish that for everyone.

“To be quite honest, when I walked out of the press room, I thought I was somewhat tough, but at the same time, I was fair because I said nice things about him. But then I checked his ranking. I didn’t know his ranking was as high as it was, to be quite honest.

It’s okay Federer, you got practise and your own tennis to concentrate on. Bernie will survive to spat another day!

“I thought he was like 50 or 60 and he was top 20. That was my bad, to be honest. But I don’t check the rankings every day. I came from the off-season. I had no clue what was going on anymore. That was my bad.”

Does he seriously believe that people will buy this, that one Roger Federer doesn’t know who is top20 even top30 player and particulary this:
“I came from the off-season. I had no clue what was going on anymore. That was my bad.”
Even my wife knows that things (rankings) before off-season are the same as after off-season, that’s why it is called off-season, no? Some of your worshippers will buy it, no doubt about that, but serious fans …no way.
Nice words about Nick too, I wonder why.. and will your buddy Stan appreciate them?

madmax Says:

Yeah Wog Boy, we believe him.

Oh. Secondly, didn’t think it would take this long for you to do an about turn to defend Tomic, you know, the guy you say you can’t stand!

What a turncoat you are wogboy. What a turncoat.

Wog Boy Says:

I am not defending anybody, least Tomic, I am discussing Roger’s acts with sane people which obviously you are not, besides, didn’t they pass my message to you last night?
Stop trying to engage me in any conversation with you, not interested in you.

Michael Says:

Roger feels that his statements about Tomic was taken literally out of context by Newsmen and presented to Tomic in bits and parts which made him react the way he did as he is yet to mature as a player as well as a person.

Whatever it may be, even if Roger is in the wrong, it was not proper on the part of Tomic to mock at Roger in a derisive fashion by comparing his current form with Novak and say that he is inferior. That is highly reprehensible eventhough it may be the truth !!
