Earlier today the Australian Open confirmed that all players who plan to play the event in January will have to be vaccinated, per the earlier government mandate.

Some reports have as many as 80% of players already vaxxed, but among those at the top of the list who are not is 9-time champion Novak Djokovic who has been outspoken against getting the COVID vaccine.

“We have been speaking to Novak and his team and they understand clearly that in order to come and play in the Australian Open they need to be fully vaccinated,” Australian Open TD Tiley said.

“They know that it’s a condition for everyone, not just the players, but the fans and all the staff and he had indicated that it’s a private decision for him and at the right time he will tell us.

Djokovic, who lost earlier today in the Turin semifinals, addressed the issue saying he had not heard the news.

“I haven’t been talking to them, to be honest. I was just waiting to hear what the news is going to be. Now that I know, we’ll just have to wait and see,” Djokovic said Saturday.

Zverev also commented at the situation, “we are visiting another country. This is not about tennis. This is about the virus that is going on. We need to follow the rules and follow the guidelines. I hope he’s able to play.”

Tiley added there has not been any pushback from players and he expects very few top players to remain unvaccinated.

The deadline for the tournament is less than a month away when we will find out who is in and who isn’t.

For Djokovic, not only is he bidding for a 10th Australian Open, but he would be the favorite to break the 3-way tie he, Rafael Nadal and Roger Federer share at 20 Grand Slam titles.
