Hurkacz Edges Bonzi For Marseille Title
Hubert Hurkacz captured his first title in Marseille turning away French hope Benjamin Bonzi 6-3, 7-6(4) in the Sunday indoors final.
The title was Hurkacz’s sixth of the 26-year-old’s career, first since Halle last summer.
“I’m super happy today. Congrats to Benjamin, he played really well,” said Hurkacz as quoted by the ATP. ”I think he deserved to win the second set, I just tried to compete as hard as I can… He’s been playing really well this year and for sure he’s going to get a title very soon.”
The top seeded Hurkacz slammed 19 aces, lost just four total points on first serve and broke twice in the win.
Hurkacz broke serve in the eighth game of the first set for 5-3 and served it out. And later would save break points to get to a breaker in the second.
Bonzi was eyeing his 1st career title in his 2nd career final. He had chances late in the second but missed on three set point tries with Hurkacz serving 5-6.
“It was a good week,” reflected Bonzi. “Unfortunately, today was not the win… He was playing very well. He was serving too good for me today. I tried to put pressure on the second set to go to a decider and see what happens. But he was too strong. It was [still] a good week with many things to remember and to improve, so we will see in the next [tournament].”
Four of Hurkacz’s six titles have come at the 250 level. He’s now 6-1 in ATP finals.
