Top Seed Hurkacz Advances To Marseille Final To Face Bonzi
Top seed Hubert Hurkacz reached the Marseille final easing past Alexander Bublik 6-4, 7-6(4).
Hurkacz pounded 22 aces and never dropped serve and improves to 5-1 against Bublik. He grabbed the lone break to go up 3-2 in the first set.
“I’ve known Sasha since I was 11 or 12 years old, so we’ve been through a lot, even played some doubles as juniors,” said Hurkacz to the ATP. “He’s such a fun guy, and he brings a lot of great energy to the sport. He can produce some unbelievable shots. It’s nice that we were playing juniors and now playing at a high level, semi-finals at an ATP event, so it’s really amazing.
Hurkacz makes his 7th career final, first since Canada last summer. He is looking for his 6th career title. Bublik was vying for his 8th career ATP final.
Hurkacz will face Benjamin Bonzi who topped France teen Arthur Fils 6-4, 6-4 to reach his second career ATP final after Pune earlier this year.
The 60th-ranked Bonzi lost just four total points on first serve and saved the only break point he faced against the 18-year-old.
Fils, 18, was bidding his 1st career tour-level final.
Hurkacz and the 26-year-old Bonzi have never played before. Bonzi will seek his first career title tomorrow.
“At the end of the week it’s a dream to have a chance to lift the trophy,” said Hurkacz, who battled to three-set wins against Leandro Riedi and Mikael Ymer in his opening two matches in Marseille. “It’s a goal, so I’m really happy that I’ve played some good tennis here.”
