In a battle of young stars, Jannik Sinner gained revenge on Ben Shelton in the first round of Vienna on Wednesday. Shelton had stunned Sinner in three earlier in the month in Shanghai, but the Italian today saved all four break chances he faced in a 7-6(2), 7-5 win.

“It was a very tough match. He always serves really well, and today was obviously the same,” said Sinner to the ATP. “He is confident, he is a very tough player to beat. I was looking forward to it. I lost the last matchup, so I’m happy that I won this one. I’m already looking forward to the next one.

“I wish him the best for the rest of the season, I think he will finish the season strong. I’m very happy about the performance and happy to be in the next round.”

Sinner, who finished with eight aces and lost just nine points on serve, gained the lone break of the match at 5-all. Shelton missed a break chances at 4-3 in the second.

Sinner returns tomorrow to take on countryman Lorenzo Sonego.

Defending champion Daniil Medvedev got off to a good start ousting the rising French teen Arthur Fils 6-4, 6-2. The Russian lost a total of five points on serve in the 75 minute win.

“I was a little bit nervous coming into the match,” said Medvedev. “Arthur wants this top win and he’s going to get it one day. But luckily I managed to serve well, play well, kind of work him out during the match and it worked, so I’m very happy.”

Medvedev will now battle the in-form Grigor Dimitrov on Thursday in the second round.

Elsewhere, No. 8 Karen Khachanov overwhelmed 21-year-old Jiri Lehecka of the Czech Republic in straight sets 6-3, 6-1. 2021 champion Alexander Zverev beat Cameron Norrie 6-2, 6-4.

Gael Monfils got over on Daniel Altmaier 6-4, 6-4 and Borna Gojo eliminated Aslan Karatsev 6-3, 6-3.

Tomorrow also sees No. 3 Andrey Rublev meeting Matteo Arnaldi in a first-time tour-level contest.

No. 4 Stefanos Tsitsipas tests Tomas Machac, No. 6 Tommy Paul will battle Gojo and also No. 7 Frances Tiafoe takes on Monfils.
