Carlos Alcaraz Rolls Right Ankle In Scary Tumble In Rio [Video]
Carlos Alcaraz took a scary tumble just two points into his 2024 Rio appearance last night.
The 20-year-old former champion was facing Brazil’s Thiago Monteiro in the first round when he went over on his right ankle. Thankfully, it didn’t look too serious, but scans Wednesday will reveal more.
“Tomorrow I’ll have a test for my ankle and let’s see if it’s something serious or not,” Alcaraz said.
“I felt, I felt bad. That was the first impression I had. I mean, I was feeling pain once I fall down, so I thought that it was going to be difficult to continue playing if I was still having those feelings.
“After a few points it didn’t feel better. I was feeling the pain. I couldn’t move well, and I knew that it was going to be impossible to continue. I thought it was going to get worse if I kept playing for such a long match and that’s why I choose to retire.”
Alcaraz, who already has a long list of injury issues, will hope to get better for the March hard court Masters swing and his Las Vegas exo against Rafael Nadal in 10 days.
The Spanish star hasn’t won a title since Wimbledon and his last final came in Cincinnati. He is just 2-3 in his last five matches.
Last year in Rio Alcaraz injured his leg in a final loss to Cameron Norrie.
