Sinner Wins Halle And First Grass Title In First Event As World No. 1
Jannik Sinner made the best start of his reign as a world No. 1 taking the Halle title today over his doubles partner at the event, Hubert Hurkacz, 7-6(8), 7-6(2).
It was Sinner’s 14th career title in 18 finals but his first on grass. The Italian at just 22 has already won titles now on all surfaces as well as indoor and outdoor hard courts.
”It means a lot. It was a tough match against Hubi,” Sinner said to the ATP. “I knew I had to serve really well and you play only a couple of really important points throughout the whole set. So I was happy and I tried to produce in the best possible way in the important moments. I’m very happy about this tournament because the first time on grass court, it’s a good feeling.”
He also becomes just the eighth man to win a title in his first event at No. 1.
Sinner didn’t have an easy road going three sets in his first three matches before straight set wins this weekend.
Sinner will head into Wimbledon where he will be arguably the favorite in his first stint as a top seed at a Grand Slam.
”I’m just looking forward to it. Last year I made semis, I played some good tennis. So let’s see what’s coming this year,” Sinner added. “I’m more confident for sure. And on this surface, obviously the grass might be a bit different from here and Wimbledon. But I have one week now to prepare [for] it, so hopefully it’s going to be a good tournament.”
