2024 Paris Olympics Day 3: Novak Djokovic v Rafael Nadal, ep 60

In a blockbuster second round, Novak Djokovic and Rafael Nadal resume their rivalry at the Paris 2024 Olympics Monday afternoon.

Nadal, today, had to overcome three break points and a 0-40 deficit on serve in the third set to put away Marton Fucsovics in three to set up the meeting, their 60th overall.

Djokovic is ahead 30-29 but Nadal holds the monster lead on the red clay at Roland Garros far ahead 8-2.

“Of course it’s beautiful to play against one of the two biggest rivals that I had in my career, especially on this court,” Nadal said. “But situations are completely different for him, for me. He’s being very competitive. I was not being very competitive for the last two years, so in that case, I think probably he is the clear favorite. I’m going to try my best to bring the best to the court and then let’s see how how far I can go and how many problems I can create him.”

The two last played at the 2022 French Open when Nadal took down Djokovic in four sets in the quarterfinals. And their first meeting ever also came at the French Open in 2006, also won by Rafa.

This time, though, Djokovic will go in as the favorite. The Serb has been the healthier and sharper player of late having just made the Wimbledon finals. And he breezed in his opener while Nadal struggled today with Fucsovics and also played a doubles match on Saturday. How fresh is Rafa? He also has his upper right thigh tapped up and stated that he wasn’t sure if he’d play singles today.

Now, he faces his toughest challenge in Djokovic. But Roland Garros and Phillippe Chatrier is home. It’s a place he’s won 14 times and holds a 112-4 record.

“It has been always super special to play against Novak, no doubt about that,” Nadal added. “But normally we have been playing for finals or for semi-finals. This is in the second round. Of course, it’s in the Olympics, where every match is super special. But it’s true that at the same time, almost every single match I arrived with a different situation than I am in today. So that makes the match more difficult for me and more unpredictable, no? But I always have hope. I always believe, and I am going to give my best.”

Djokovic calls the match-up the “last dance”.

“We’ll spread some fireworks on the court, like the good old times,” Djokovic said on Saturday. “I hope we get to meet because it will probably be one last dance for both of us.”

While Djokovic-Nadal rightly gets center stage, there are other matches.

Iga Swiatek looks to win her 23rd straight at Roland Garros in the Chatrier Opener. Fellow French Open winner Carlos Alcaraz is on at night and US Open champion Coco Gauff headlines Lenglen court and Barbora Krejcikova, Casper Ruud and Jasmine Paolini are also in action.

92 Comments for 2024 Paris Olympics Day 3: Novak Djokovic v Rafael Nadal, ep 60

All Out Says:

Nadal is getting slaughtered out there as expected. Can he manage to avoid a double bagel at this point? God this is so bad!!

Van Persie Says:

Perhaps Rafa will be on fire starting with the 2nd set.

Alison hodge Says:

Yes disappointing to see such an amazing player, fall so far into decline, the old Nadal would’ve creamed anyone on this surface once, just embarrassing, what was he thinking playing singles anyway urgh

All Out Says:

With the way he’s serving now I really doubt it.

All Out Says:

Wow! He did avoid a bagel. Will it be a breadstick and bagel instead? How the mighty has fallen :(

All Out Says:

The best thing Rafa can do now is just go for broke and finish this as quickly as he can. Get more time to rest for his doubles match and concentrate on only that.

Alison hodge Says:

Yeah agree so sad 😞

Van Persie Says:

Reminds me of that match in Doha from 2016? Not sure it was 2016 or 2015. But now on clay.

Van Persie Says:

Zverev was not that hungry, when he played Rafa at the French this year.
Nole is fighting for each point.

Alison hodge Says:

I can understand why now that Novak wanted to play this Rafa so badly

All Out Says:

If this is not a clear sign I don’t know what is. It’s time for Rafa to hang up his boots and enjoy his life. He is never getting back to his old level and it is absolutely pathetic to watch. Sad day for tennis surely but everything good has to end sometime.

Alison hodge Says:

Yeah exactly, congrats Novak, but this is definitely not the Rafa of old, I’m so angry he played singles anyway tarnishing his legacy like this 😡😡😡😡😡😡😡

Van Persie Says:

but he plays better in the 2nd!

Van Persie Says:

Bravo Nole! A win at Roland Garros against the King of Clay is sweet for sure! 🙂

Rafa, thank you for showing up😉

This was perhaps Rafa’s last match on this court, we’ll see next year.

Wog Boy Says:

31 > 29

VP,

Nole lost a focus for a while, I don’t take much pleasure in beating washed up Nadal, but it was his decision to play singles, he wouldn’t do that if he didn’t believe he can do some damage, you play you are healthy and ready, otherwise give chance to some young player to experience playing Olympics.

Wog Boy Says:

“….Novak wanted to play this Rafa so badly….”

Where did you get that one from?!

Van Persie Says:

WB,

Exactly! and it is not Nole’s fault, that Rafa decided to play singles.

Alison hodge Says:

I didn’t blame Novak for Rafa playing singles, I blame Rafa himself for playing singles

Alison hodge Says:

Novak said he wanted to play Rafa

Giles Says:

Rafa was never going to withdraw from this match. I’m glad he played. Hope Faker is proud of himself beating an unfit Nadal. Well he’s a cheap fuck isn’t he. I hope he does not win a Gold Medal. He doesn’t deserve it. As for his fans? Shameful to the nth degree.

Giles Says:

https://x.com/thetennisletter/status/1817916780125602295?s=61
Take note faker arseholes.
I will end by 🙏🏼 that he does not win Gold at the Olympics. He doesn’t deserve it!

Giles Says:

It is so sad. He’s winning and still people don’t like him. He must be the most hated athlete on the planet!

Tennispompom Says:

Wow! That’s the worst case of sour grapes I’ve ever seen, verging on the psychotic.

Nadal tried his hardest, but his injuries caught up with him. Djokovic played a brilliant first set and a half, and nearly lost the plot allowing Nadal to even the score line. Perhaps he hasn’t quite recovered from his knee op?

I think they both wanted to win so much, but there can only be one winner in a tennis match. I’m glad that Novak won, and hope he goes on to get the gold.

Van Persie Says:

Hey Giles,

Before going to bed and praying for Nole, so that he doesn’t win the golden medal, do not forget to brush your theeth😉

Have a gooood night!🙂

chrisford1 Says:

Alison – “the old Nadal would’ve creamed anyone on this surface once.”

Rafa is undoubtedly the King of Clay, as long as pro tennis endures. But never invulnerable. His Uncle Toni once remarked after Rafa won the thrilling 2013 French Open semifinal between the two – that Rafa only feared one player on clay.
Novak Djokovic.
And that was back in Rafa’s prime.

Rafa entered and the luck of the draw landed him with Novak. Bad luck for him. HIs last match may end up being a loss to his Nemesis – at Roland Garros, of all venues!
For Djokovic – not a stellar year – but this is a sweet treat. He locks up his historical H2H with Rafa, by beating him AT RG in the Olympics!

Alison hodge Says:

If you say so, never was a fan of that 2013 semi, for certain reasons, never was a fan of this rivalry either, but each to their own, your entitled to your opinion like I’m entitled to mine PEACE, Olympics is awesome Rafas still in doubles, and already has two gold medals anyway, so nothing to prove there, and there loads of other amazing sports to watch as well as tennis PEACE 🎾✌️

Alison hodge Says:

And no player is in vulnerable either

Giles Says:

Alison. Well said.

Alison hodge Says:

👍

zed Says:

CF1, the treat was that tasty breadstick.

Mmmm, yummy :)

Oh how sweet it is :) :) :)

Okiegal Says:

Win, lose or draw, I am so glad he competed!! He loves his homeland and wanted to play for his country on the surface he loves! But yeah, I did not have high expectations regarding his match today. But he gave it his best shot!! Good luck to him and Carlito in the dubs!!

(31-29 head to head……nothing outrageous for the so-called goat!! Think of the months Rafa did not even play because of injuries. I have always said that there is not that much difference in talent between these two athletes. Of course we all agree Rafa is better than Novak on clay. Records have proved that. I have also noticed that Rafa does seem to be more loved……❤️❤️❤️

VAMOS!!

zed Says:

I found this song about Farmer Giles. It has no relevance to the topic at all but I thought Gile might get a laugh out of it.

Without further ado, here is Farmer Giles:

Wog Boy Says:

Let us have a better look at 31 – 29 h2h which is very deceiving. Realistically, h2h should read around 40 – 30 in Nole’s favour.

While Nole vs Roger h2h is pretty accurate since they use to turn up regularly on every tournament regardless of surface, Nole vs Rafa (and Roger vs Rafa for that matter) is very screwed since Rafa was avoiding HC (and grass) tournaments whenever he could, meaning avoiding to face Nole (and Roger) on their favourite surface particularly tournaments after USO, on the other hand Nole was turning up for every CC tournament knowing that more likely than not he’ll lose against King of Clay.

I’ll give you one example, Rafa qualified 17 times for WTFs but turned up to play only 11 times making two finals which he lost to Roger and Nole. 6 times he didn’t turn up due to “injury”, we can only guess how would he finish if he played them, add to this numerous Shanghai and Paris masters, Wimbledon and other HC tournaments and it’s not rocket science to work out how his h2h with the other two would look like if did play.

More than 2/3 of Rafa wins (20-9) are on clay and clay represents 1/3 of masters and 1/4 of GSs, so yes, Rafa is inferior player to Nole.

Van Persie Says:

I do not like the excuse:Rafa did not play moths or years due to injury. It shows, his playing style did lead to that.
Nole had also his share of problems in 2009 and 2010 and he changed his life style. Starting with 2011 he dominated this era in tennis! Not easy to make such changes, but is also a part of becoming a great champion. Rafa was only able to make great comebacks on clay and now and then at the US Open

Wog Boy Says:

“..Not easy to make such chang…..”

You can’t be more right, I keep trying to make them for a years (on Dr advice) but I just can’t, I like to eat….and drink 🤷🏻‍♂️

Wog Boy Says:

^^^^
for VP

Alison hodge Says:

Hi Okie lovely to read you, just a thought but the last time a player won RG and SW19 back to back, and a gold medal in the same year was Rafa, I wonder if Carlos could do the same, another Spaniard, also heads up to Murray and Evans in doubles what a fight back that was MPs down, want Nadalcaraz to get the doubles gold, and Murray Evans to get the silver, Carlos to get singles gold, not asking for much lol, anyway Olympics is amazing love it, so many amazing sports, sportsmen and women, the Greece Canada match was amazing from a neutral POV, USA too, loved our Adam Peaty, and Tom Daly it was beautiful to see beautiful seeing families there cheering them on, Rafas little boy is adorable with his little smile and fist pumps, chip of the old block 🥰

Van Persie Says:

WB,

Yes, I know the feeling. :D

I decided to remove almost completely processed carbohydrates from my diet last year. Not to say that in the first 2 months I was almost in withdrawal. But it was worth it. I did medical tests again almost half a year later, and most of the aspects have improved significantly. Skin, gums are healthier.
It was hard, but I really feel much better now and I wouldn’t go back to my old diet. I feel now 10 years younger. :)

Wog Boy Says:

VP,

Let me clarify, alcohol doesn’t count as processed carbohydrates, no?

If so I think I’ll do that diet, I can handle it 😁

Van Persie Says:

WB,

Alcohol is not a carbohydrate, but it is not very good either. I reduced my consumption to one glass of wine a day. On occasions I drink as much as I like ;)

I gave up almost anything containing sugar, wheat flour, corn flour (which contains starch, contains carbs). I still consume it on occasion.
I used to like sweet chocolate a lot, now I consume chocolate with 80-99% cocoa content. I eat a lot of meat (beef steak medium-raw is the richest in vitamins and minerals), chees, eggs and salads. And I eat fruits in moderation. I managed to lose 14 kilograms in 6 months, without starving myself. :D

Wog Boy Says:

VP,

You’ll convert me into new diet, all those things you mentioned I like…

Van Persie Says:

WB,

I like Jordan Peterson a lot. He’s on a carnivore diet: he eats only beef with salt and drinks only water. I am not able to have is so strict, so I my diet is something between keto and mediterranean diet. Works for me, I had good results. I did learn on my skin, to put it like that, how dangerous sugar and processed carbs can be. We forget sometimes that humans were hunters first…pastry appeared much later..

Wog Boy Says:

VP,

Give me some time, I’ll give it a go but I am in the middle of downsizing, renovating new place we purchased and moving in (hopefully by the end of the year) and doing up existing where we live in order to offload it as good as possible since that’s my retirement plan/money.

I know it sounds like excuse, but nevertheless good one 😉

Giles Says:

https://x.com/rupak_dewangan/status/1818235914583478319?s=61 It’s such a shame Rafa wasn’t at full strength yesterday. He would have slaughtered the arsehole if he was.#Fact

Van Persie Says:

WB,

No hurry with that. You have to be relaxed, when you are starting with it.
Good luck with your plans. ;)

chrisford1 Says:

Okie gal – Ahem. While Rafa was often injured, it always seemed to happen during hardcourt season, then Rafa made miraculous recoveries upon clay season start!
Now it could be that he avoided hardcourt due to previous injury to knees, ankles as claimed. Or he didn’t relish the thought of playing Murray, Novak, and Roger on hardcourt where he lost most of his tennis advantages. A game and talent ideal for clay, but not fast hardcourt, or indoors hard court. But many believed Novak was a significant cause of Rafa’s avoiding many hardcourt phases of the ATP after 2011, and Roger in previous years,
+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
Most loved? Eff most loved! Pro sports aren’t simply for displaying Mr, Miss, or “They” Congeniality Award winners, as determined by Nike or other brands pimping them…
If most loved mattered, Ana Kournikova and Eugenie Bouchard would be Hall of Famers.
+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

chrisford1 Says:

Congrats on the diet change and great weight loss results you have obtained, VP.

Giles Says:

https://x.com/stroppa_del/status/1818317992855224366?s=61 Here’s Rafa’s sculpture. Does the faker have one anywhere? NO!

Alison hodge Says:

Okiegal all one word not too 😐
Anyway Nadalcaraz look hot in doubles, Rafa should stick to playing doubles with Carlos, and see if Carlos can get a gold medal in singles, last time a player won RG and SW19 back to back was Rafa in 2008,and he went on to win a gold medal at the Olympics, wonder history can repeat itself, fingers crossed 🏅🤞

Alison hodge Says:

Sorry not two

Alison hodge Says:

Go Evans and Murray 🎾

Okiegal Says:

@CF1…….. yawn…..🥱🥱🤣🤣

He was hurt a lot and you know it. I will guarantee you the tennis circuit was not disappointed when Rafa was out of commission and sidelined, sometimes for months. I am sure Roger, Novak and Andy were all giving a big sigh of relief under their breath. Heck, Rafa was so honest about who he might have to play when questioned. I remember one time in an interview they asked him about the possibility of playing Novak. He said I like a good challenge but I’m not stupid!! Lol..He knows the threats of all his opponents. He takes no match lightly or for granted. He’s very humble. That’s why he is so loved. I repeat, so loved!! ❤️❤️❤️

VAMOS!!

Hi Al and thanks for the feedback! I always enjoy your comments! 😊
Hi Giles….. I always enjoy your links! Always so informative!! 😊

Sincerely, Okie, a once upon a time cowgirl!! 🤠🤠

Alison hodge Says:

Hi Okie right on girl 😉

Wog Boy Says:

“He was hurt a lot and you know it.”😂Haha

…and how does he (we) “know it”, by his or his team statement ?!

Alison hodge Says:

Okiegal it’s been a tough year to start, Clive had a heart attack back in March

Duro Says:

Someone tell this schizo/psycho Giselle that we all saw the flag next to that false “Fred Meyer” Twitter account which belongs to some Kelmendi or Krasniqi character from Kosovo, living in some western foreign country, hiding behind it.

Therefore, comments – not valid.

Politically and chauvinistically motivated derogatory comments – not accepted.

Overall, complete Novak diminishing attempt sequence – insignificant.

The poster here utterly embarrassed by it, but she already knows that. If not for the registered mental patient she is, I would mock her about the pain she suffered due to Rafa’s loss, but like this, no satisfaction left in it whatsoever…

Just get well (a really sincere wish).

Okiegal Says:

@Alison …… I remembered seeing a comment about Clive having a medical issue. Just wanted to check on him. I hope things have leveled off with him and he’s making progress to getting healthy once again. I will be 79 in August and doing better than I deserve! Lol. I stepped in a hole back in January and broke my ankle. That took me about 8 weeks to get over, but I did it! Take care and I enjoy your comments, as always! Rafa still rocks… right?? Lol

VAMOS!!

Alison hodge Says:

Okie he carries on like nothings happened lol, which is a good thing I suppose lol, anyway don’t ever say your doing better than you deserve, because you deserve the best, I hope your ankle gets better, and Rafa is awesome win or lose VAMOS, have a lovely day Okie XX 😍🎾

Alison hodge Says:

Lol I think that link was all tounge in cheek, just a bit of fun, what makes it funny is that you would never in a million years here Rafa talk like that, there was a similar one with Federer, all done in fun, no harm or foul….

Van Persie Says:

CF1,

Thank you! I just wanted to live healthie, after I dod some medical check and got some bad scores. 😀Weight loss was a bonu. Now I can wear the same size as in highschool😆.

Van Persie Says:

Duro,

Don’t bother yourself too much.
Nole’s fans are on the winner’s side. They just come hear now and then on this site, to get a bit of fun, to celebrate decades of “hard work”.
Others come here to vomit their frustration. A free world🙂
Am glad to be a part of the 1st category😂

Duro Says:

VP,

I wouldn’t normally, but using Twitter fraudster’s links to make a point, I just had to expose it. Derogatory comments about Novak from Twitter false character named “Fred Meyer” with Kosovo flag behind it – simply don’t count.

And hey, a poster here praying for someone not to win a gold medal, how sick is that!???

Tennispompom called it psychotic. It’s even disturbingly deeper illness than that.

Anyway, obsessively hatred driven schizo/psycho at best.

Not to mention that I know who she is from long time ago, ha ha ha.

No male nick would hide it from me…

Van Persie Says:

Duro,

Ah, ok. He or she, as I’m not sure about the gender is using each twitter sh&t which disconsiders Nole or his fans.
This is the problem with the online these days. We get so. much BS…
It is obviously a person who hates Nole very much 😂 and also very consisten in showing this on this site. Sometimes I am amused, sometimes it pisses me off… got used to it.😆

Alison hodge Says:

Aww that was so sad, Rafa looks heartbroken, I hope this isn’t the end, but I feel it is😢

Alison hodge Says:

But not saying the Nadal fan base are perfect, ,but it’s not as if the Novak fan base don’t do their fair share of mud slinging on this forum, tough been a fan….

Wog Boy Says:

VP,

When I bumped into this site around 15 years ago Duro was part of small but nevertheless strong and resilient Nole fan base, the reason I stayed here were them and the way they responded to hostility and abuse in those days towards Nole and Nole fans, they don’t post here anymore, you can see them on very rare occasions coming back like Duro did now.

In those days this site was Federer site, 65-70% posters were Federer fans, 25-30% Nadal and 5% Nole fans, but quality over quantity is what matters and those Nole fans were my inspiration, I was novice and basically their sidekick, which I stayed until these days😁

Okiegal Says:

@Alison….. Happy to hear Clive has bounced back! My ankle is doing great. Once in awhile it will get sore… then it goes away.

I agree with you about the video. Anyone that would take that seriously knows nothing about Rafa! He’d never do that, not ever!! Definitely tongue in cheek!! 🤣🤣🤣 I did get a big chuckle when I watched it. Hilarious!! As loyal faithful fans of our faves, I think we all can get a little testy when someone bashes them. These top guys have entertained us for years. What a ride it’s been!! I’ll leave it at that….

Duro Says:

Hey, Wog.

We never talked, but I noticed your posts very well. I quit posting once Nole got to number 1. I announced his ascent to the throne a year before, in 2010 knowing what was inevitable for the next, with: Ole, ole, ole, ole, No1e, No1e… chants and let him do the talk from then on. My “mission” was accomplished.

I am leaving now again, but before that, I have to give you the credit for “borrowing” Giselle from you in addressing this pest. I hope you won’t mind me breaking your intellectual property rights.

For other posters, short advice: respect players! Nothing else.

Bye.

skeezer Says:

He Duro, long time no post.

Hope all is well.

“For other posters, short advice: respect players! Nothing else.”

That is great advice for WB.

Wog Boy Says:

Duro,

You are very welcome, feel free to use.

It was good to see you back, it was great bunch of Nole fans in those days, think about one last reunion the day Nole announced retirement, I know most of you moved on Twitter or elsewhere, I see occasionally familiar names from here, having a last cheer for the greatest tennis player to ever hold the racket would great way to say goodbye to this site, that day my mission would be accomplished.
Cheers and all the best 🥃🥃

Wog Boy Says:

“For other posters, short advice: respect players! Nothing else.”

That is great advice for WB.
————

That’s a bit rich coming from Sleezer, formerly Gisele’s nemesis now member of the trio of her worshippers and Nole haters club.

That’s ok, you don’t expect anything better from hypocrites.

skeezer Says:

Not rich, just right..

Wog Boy Says:

https://x.com/Certinfy/status/1818718370361143503#

Is this the hangover from being thumped by Nole, disrespecting chair umpire?

PS
I bet my house that this was last Nadul’s match on tour, he won’t be playing USO, he’ll play Laver’s cup and cry with his mate, two former GOATS 😭

Alison hodge Says:

Is anybody actually watching the Olympics, there’s so many great sports, and sportsmen and women out there, sports I don’t usually get to see where I am, I’m so excited for taikwondo, and water polo, must admit to missing Mo Farrar, and Usain Bolt though

skeezer Says:

Meanwhile, while Djokerites want to only talk about Djoker fandom, there is Olympic tennis being played at the higherst order. Alcarez just played a phenomenal match against Paul to get into the medal round. Great tennis!

Giles Says:

This arsehole Pavvy G must be the most vile faker fan ever. Cringeworthy! Pfffffft.

Alison hodge Says:

Skeezer Carlos looks very good

Wog Boy Says:

Mr Butthurt, last time I checked this is Nole/Rafa thread and we are talking about them, there is Alcaraz QF thread so you are free to post there instead of coming here to provoke 😉

But wait, Nole is on that thread too, and he just has beaten Tsitsi after being 0:4 in the second set, bugger🤷🏻‍♂️

Wog Boy Says:

“ This arsehole Pavvy G must be the most vile faker fan ever. Cringeworthy! Pfffffft.”

Coming from Gisele😂😂😂

chrisford1 Says:

WB – I was unaware of your post of Rafa regularly ducking hardcourt events, made before my post. Then noticed our great, but booze-soaked minds (sometimes soaked, not always!) think alike!

Besides hardcourts, there is Rafa being almost totally spooked by playing under a roof. He had 2 titles of 39 events held indoors and avoided them like crazy after 2016. 39 events plus the infamous 2018 Wimbledon semi where Novak’s camp decided to leave the roof closed because everyone knew Rafa superstitiously thought “under a roof means doom for Rafa”.
That was an absolute classic “peak” Rafa and Novak match. Pivotal for returning Djokovic to the game after his physical and mental breakdowns in late 2016 and through 2017.

Wog Boy Says:

“Then noticed our great, but booze-soaked minds (sometimes soaked, not always!) think alike”
Love it👍
