2024 Paris Olympics Day 2: Nadal One Win From Djokovic Showdown; Murray Farewell?

After a successful start to the Paris Olympics in doubles, Rafael Nadal will ditch Carlos Alcaraz and go solo as he takes on Marton Fucsovics in the first round.

Nadal, though, has been nursing a right thigh injury and following the Saturday doubles, the 2-time gold medalist hinted he might not be able to play.

“Tomorrow, I don’t know what’s going to happen,” said Nadal. “I don’t know if I’m going to play or not.”

If Nadal beats Fucsovics — the two have never played — he’ll set a second round showdown with Novak Djokovic. Knowing he has a better chance at a medal in doubles, will Rafa put his body through it and risk leaving empty?

“[I have to] make the smartest decision possible to have the best chances to bring medal back home,” je said.

Nadal, though, couldn’t deny the Olympic spirit.

“It was an emotional night,” he added. “An electrifying night, an amazing crowd. Playing with Carlos on this court is so special. I’m super happy with the victory and that we have the chance to keep going.”

Andy Murray closes Lenglen in doubles in what could be his final match of his career. The Scot will join Dan Evans to battle Kei Nishikori and Taro Daniel.

Wimbledon champion Barbora Krejcikova opens play on Chatrier with Coco Gauff and defending gold medalist Alexander Zverev at night.

Casper Ruud, Stefanos Tsitsipas, Stan Wawrinka are also in action and Lorenzo Musetti meets Gael Monfils in the pick of the day.

The women will also see action from Jessica Pegula, Maria Sakkari and Danielle Collins.

Rain prevent any play to be completed on the outside courts on Saturday. The weather is supposed to be much better and clear on Sunday for what will be a very busy day.

10 Comments for 2024 Paris Olympics Day 2: Nadal One Win From Djokovic Showdown; Murray Farewell?

All Out Says:

What is the point of playing singles here for Rafa I don’t get.. Even if he wins this one he’s not at any level to handle Djokovic. He should’ve just concentrated on doubles and given his all to get a medal for his country.

Alison hodge Says:

Urgh Exactly not a match I’m looking forward to with any relish😒

skeezer Says:

The Olympic experience for athletes is a whole lot of fun. Am sure Rafa is there for at least partly that. Agree he has no chance against Djoker.
Meanwhile, Mens Basketball USA just won against Serbia. Go USA!

chrisford1 Says:

#60 Djokovic-Nadal match. The most in any ATP rivalry.
30-29 in Djokovic’s favor.
Its a big game, obviously. Stakes are high , obviously as well.
This might be Rafa’s last match if he loses.
Novak is supposedly favored, but it is Roland Garros and it is not like Nadal tanks matches there.
BUt if NOvak wins, how sweet it will be to likely close out the rivalry with a win over Nadal, here on clay.

A treat for the Olympics to be the venue for it. For fans and the international audience.

Alison hodge Says:

I don’t know what he was thinking playing singles, a treat for Novak to beat a past it Rafa, of course it is, I’ll watch the doubles, but definitely not another Rafa Novak match, still each to their own

Alison hodge Says:

Skeezer Adam Peaty swimming, silver but still awesome 🐟😀
