Grieving Sabalenka Wins At Rainy Miami Masters; Alcaraz, Swiatek, Sinner Saturday
Just days after the death of her ex-boyfriend, Aryna Sabalenka took the court in Miami with a heavy heart but prevailed over good friend Paula Badosa 6-4 6-3.
Sabalenka didn’t speak to the press following the death of Konstantin Koltsov who died at the age of 42 after falling from a hotel balcony in Miami.
Badosa did meet with the media.
“I wasn’t surprised at all,” Badosa said of Sabalenka’s level. “She’s a very, very strong woman, strong personality. You can see it on the court. Especially I know her off court. It doesn’t surprise me at all. I knew she was going to play very well or like normal. I told her I wish her the best. Let’s see if she can go very deep in this tournament.”
Coco Gauff rolled into the third round crushing former French semifinalist Nadia Podoroska 6-1, 6-2.
“Yeah, it was a good match for me. Lots of waiting, but glad we were able to get it done today,” Gauff said. “I didn’t really think about trying to finish until the last game of the match when I kind of saw it getting darker, then they turned on the lights, and the temperature dropped. I’m from here, so I know that’s rain coming any second.”
On the men’s side, Tomas Machac continued his strong form upsetting Andre Rublev 6-4, 6-4.
Rains delayed play early and then again late, cancelled a large portion of the second round matches.
Tomorrow’s loaded schedule features Australian Open winners Jannik Sinner and Sabalenka plus Indian Wells winners Carlos Alcaraz and Iga Swiatek.
More rain is expected for Saturday, however.
