Ginepri Ousted, Federer v Haas Today in MiamiPosted on March 27, 2006 All three of the Top 10-seeded players in action advanced into the fourth round Sunday at the Masters Series-Miami, but not without some difficulty in (3) David Nalbandian (d. (26) Tomas Berdych 6-0 in the third), (5) Nikolay Davydenko (d. (25) Marcos Baghdatis from a set down), and (6) Ivan Ljubicic (d. (30) Filippo Volandri).
"I couldn't do my best shots in the first set so it was very tough -- both of us had break points but nobody could make it," Nalbandian told reporters. "Then I start playing a little better and my returns come better all the time and he falls down a little bit. I really feel good at start of second set." Other seeded winners Sunday were (15) Radek Stepanek (d. Massu from a set down), (16) Nicolas Kiefer (d. (18) Gonzalez in three), and (22) Mario Ancic (d. Serra in three). In the two late matches Sunday night, Belgian Christophe Rochus continued No. 20-seeded American Robby Ginepri's troubles with a win from a set down, and Argentina's Agustin Calleri shocked former No. 1 Carlos Moya in straight sets. Doubles upsets on the day were orchestrated by Suk/Vizner (d. (3) Knowles/Nestor in three), Frenchmen Clement/Llodra (d. (7) Aspelin/Perry), and Czechs Damm/Stepanek (d. (8) Cermak/Friedl in three). Marquee highlights in Monday play are Tim Henman vs. (Q) Simon Greul, (4) Andy Roddick vs. (31) Fernando Verdasco, (1) Roger Federer vs. (27) Tommy Haas in the match of the day, (9) James Blake vs. (23) Jarkko Nieminen, (7) Guillermo Coria vs. (29) Olivier Rochus, and in doubles (5) Fabrice Santoro/Nenad Zimonjic vs. Croats Mario Ancic/Ivan Ljubicic. |
