After a 4-2 run in Australia, Anett Konteviet got back to the comfort of indoor tennis and rolled to yet another title, topping Maria Sakkari 5-7, 7-6, 7-5 in the final of St. Petersburg.

Kontaveit, who ended the last half of 2021 on a torrid run, has now won her last 20 matches indoors. That span includes titles at Ostrava, Moscow, Cluj-Napoca and now St. Petersburg.

Sakkari had control of the match leading by a set and a break in the second. And again had a break lead in the third, but couldn’t hang on for a second career title.

“It was such a tough battle,” she told the WTA. “I was behind in the score so many times that I couldn’t quite believe that I managed to pull that off. Really just so proud of myself with the way I managed to stick in the match and just keep fighting and just feel like I never, never gave up. Just so happy with the way I managed to put up a really good fight and eventually just keep calm and get through it.”

And the Estonian doesn’t have an explanation for her sudden indoor success.

“Before last year, I didn’t think that I like playing on indoor courts that much,” she added. “So it’s just sort of something that’s happened. Before this week, I also didn’t know about the stats that much. I’m not sure if there’s something specific about those indoor courts that go well with my game so much or if it’s just a coincidence.”

Kontaveit has now won six career titles, five coming since the start of August.
