Ruud, Fritz, Zverev Top 3 Seeds In Top Heavy Geneva Field
Several top players opted to get one last chance to fine tune their clay game in Geneva this week. Former French finalist Casper Ruud leads the field along with American No. 1 Taylor Fritz and Alexander Zverev.
Ruud comes in as a 2-time defending champion while Zverev won the title in 2019.
Top seeds are: 1 Casper Ruud, 2 Taylor Fritz, 3 Alexander Zverev, 4 Grigor Dimitrov, 5 Ben Shelton, 6 Tallon Griekspoor, 7 Bernabe Zapata Miralles, 8 Adrian Mannarino.
Both Zverev and Dimitrov took late wildcards into the event.
No. 1 Ruud is projected to meet 6 Griekspoor in the quarters, No. 3 Zverev was projected to get 5 Shelton, No. 7 Zapata Miralles – 4 Dimitrov,and 8 seed Mannarino – 2 Fritz in the bottom quarter.
The semifinals could see Ruud-Zverev and Fritz-Dimitrov.
The top seeded Ruud opens with bye then gets the winner of Hugo Dellien and JJ Wolf. The second seeded Fritz also opens with a bye before the victory between Alexander Bublik and Marcos Giron.
Among the notable first round matches: Nicolas Jarry-Dusan Lajovic, Alexander Bublik-Marcos Giron and Ben Shelton-Marco Cecchinato.
Already today the first round got underway with Cecchinato knocking out Shelton in three sets. Chris Eubanks made his tour-level clay debut taking down Benoit Paire. Eubanks will now face Zverev in the second round.
