Worried Djokovic Falls To Machac In Geneva SFs, Doesn’t See Himself As The French Favorite

Novak Djokovic will go into the French Open without a title. The Serb took a late wildcard into Geneva a week ago but today his run in Switzerland came to an end to Tomas Machac in a strange 6-4, 0-6, 6-1 loss to the Czech.

Djokovic was up early in the match 4-2 but fell apart. The world No. 1 began complaining, was overheating on the changeovers in the sub-70F weather and looks out of sorts. But in the second he got into gear hammering Machac.

However, in the third things went wayward as Djokovic all but went away.

“Of course I am worried… I haven’t been playing good at all this year,” Djokovic told the ATP about the French and his form.

“[I’ve had] some [good] matches here and there but it is what it is. You have to accept it. I don’t consider myself a favorite there. I’m going to take it match by match and see how far I can go.”

After the best win of his career, Machac will take on the winner of Flavio Cobolli and Casper Ruud in the final. That semifinal was postponed due to rain.

The Serb will have three full days to ready for his French Open first round Tuesday against home favorite Pierre-Hugues Herbert. It’s the first time Djokovic will go into Paris without even a final on the year since 2018.

“It was good that I could come here and play more than one match. I played three,” Djokovic added. “I just need to feel better. It’s not enjoyment when you are suffering on the court feeling this way. You’re not able to focus on tennis when you have other stuff happening. I just hope I can be fit and ready and prepared for Roland Garros.”
