2024 French Open Day 9: Djokovic Recovery? Zverev v Rune, Ruud v Fritz
The last of the fourth round matches will be played Monday at the French Open. All eyes will be on Novak Djokovic who will have to recover from a 4 hour, 30 minute affair with Lorenzo Musetti in a match that ended at 3:06am Saturday night.
The Serb won’t play that late Monday. Djokovic will be on not before 4pm in Paris against the man with a big forehand Francisco Cerundolo in a first-time meeting.
Djokovic will seek his 370th career Grand Slam match win which would an all-time record.
Getting the night match is Alexander Zverev. The German who last Monday knocked out Rafael Nadal returns to Chatrier to take on Holger Rune. Rune won their only previous meeting back at 2022 Munich.
“Interesting match,” Rune said looking ahead. “We played each other long time agoo. The first ATP title I won I beat him on the way, so obviously I have good memories of that week and playing him.
“On Monday it’s going to be different match, it’s the best-of-five sets. It’s a Grand Slam, so obviously more tension for both of us, I guess. We both want to do well. He’s been playing some good tennis. I’ve been raising my level as well. So I’m expecting a big fight.”
Taylor Fritz also went five sets and will now have to regroup to face 2-time finalist Casper Ruud. Ruud took their only collision at the 2022 ATP Finals.
Daniil Medvedev also takes on Alex de Minaur for a 9th time with Medvedev leading 6-2.
“We both move great,” Medvedev said of de Minaur. “I feel like we both know how to attack well, but at the same time we’re not someone who both of us who can make one shot that’s going to decide the rally, so then the rally goes long and long because we both defend well.
“I feel like we had a lot of good matches. Some he won; some I won. Some were in a way better than the others. Some were maybe a bit worse level. All of them were fun, and I’m looking forward to it. First time on clay. We practiced a week before Roland Garros in Monte-Carlo. I think we can both play well, and it’s going to be interesting.”
Like the men’s draw, many top names have also come through the women’s draw.
Elena Rybakina takes on Elina Svitolina. The two haven’t played in nearly three years with Svitolina leads 2-1.
Aryna Sabelanka will American Emma Navarro. The 23-year-old Navarro is in her first Slam fourth round while Sabalenka has won her last 20 sets in Slams.
New Frenchwoman Varvara Gracheva meets 17-year-old Mirra Andreeva and Jasmine Paolini faces Elina Avanesyan.
