The start of the second round today at Wimbledon sees some solid matchups, especially on Centre Court.

Four-time Grand Slam winner Naomi Osaka takes on the American surprise of 2024 Emma Navarro. Navarro has rose up to prominence on the WTA tour behind her calm demeanor and penetrating shots.

The Italians have certainly been the story in the men’s game with Jannik Sinner leading the charge. Today, the world No. 1 will take on Matteo Berrettini. The hard-luck Berrettini made the final at Wimbledon in 2021 but a win today will return him to the champions conversation.

“It’s unbelievable if you think about how many players there are,” Berrettini said. “Even to qualify for the Olympics, you have to be top 40, which some years ago would have been just crazy to think about.

“Sometimes I make mistakes with this, but I think we all have respect for Thomas Fabbiano. I think he played in Rio, and he out of the 100. It shows how we improve our ranking.

“Sometimes I think I was kind of like the first one of this generation, you know? Like I used to be the young one, and now I’m the older one. But I think it’s great for everybody: for the players, firstly, and then for tennis fans. There are so many in Italy. For the whole movement.

“I think it’s really nice, and, I don’t know how to just say, yeah. I think all the Italians are proud of what we’re doing. Obviously, now Jannik is doing things that are unbelievable, but also the other guys are doing — I mean, Musetti was in the Finals at Queen’s again.

“Personally, it gives me so much energy to just try, like, to be there and to play against him and to be at his level. For me it’s really useful.”

Daniil Medvedev opens play on Centre Court against Frenchman Alexandre Muller.

Carlos Alcaraz resume his title defense against the Australian Aleksander Vukic on Court 1.

“I’m enjoying every time that I play on grass. Even last year or 2022, I always enjoy playing here. I think it’s a surface that I can put my style. I love this game on grass, hitting good shots, playing on grass, trying to go to the net all the time. I love and I enjoy playing this style, this game,” Alcaraz said Monday.

“For me, I did a great tournament, achieved great things here on grass. As you said, I didn’t play too many matches. But every time that I walk on the court, I enjoy my game here on grass.”

Coco Gauff, who’s now a strong favorite to get to the final from the bottom half, and fellow US Open winner Emma Raducanu are in action.

“I think in Grand Slams it gives me a lot of confidence because I don’t even think the US Open was my best tennis the whole tournament,” Gauff said. “I had a lot of three-set matches early on, and obviously towards the end.

“It gives me a lot of confidence. I feel like the last couple slams, Australian and French, I think I won a lot of matches in straight sets in the earlier rounds of the tournament. So I think I’m just getting better at taking care of business and trying to clean up and make sure that these matches don’t go three sets.”

Casper Ruud, Tommy Paul, Grigor Dimitrov and a good one with fan favorites Stan Wawrinka taking on Gael Monfils.

The women will also see action from Madison Keys, French Open finalist Jasmine Paolini and Daria Kasatkina.
