Novak Djokovic was honored in special ceremony Monday at the Rogers Cup Montreal. Djokovic received the No. 1 trophy from outgoing ATP CEO Adam Helfant.

“It’s an extreme honor for me to receive this trophy knowing the names of the players who have won this trophy in the past tennis history,” said Djokovic. “Of course it’s a pleasure to receive it here, where I have won the biggest tournament of [my career at] that time in 2007.”

Djokovic became the 25th player to hold the No. 1 ranking after reaching the Wimbledon final last month.

Djokovic, who is 48-1 this year with a tour-leading eight titles, will play his first match as a No. 1 tonight against former Top 5 Nikolay Davydenko. Djokovic leads the Russian 3-2 in their career series but the two haven’t played since 2009.

Defending champion Andy Murray is also in action vs. big-serving Kevin Anderson and after a good win yesterday over Jarkko Nieminen Juan Martin Del Potro returns against Marin Cilic.

“I’m doing well this season,” said Del Potro who missed all of last summer because of a wrist injury. “I already won two tournaments. I made the semifinals. I beat Top 10 players. Many good things for me in this year. But, of course, I’m looking forward for the next Grand Slam. It’s my favorite. And I will be there [for the first time since winning the title in] 2009, so it will be fantastic for my confidence.”

Djokovic and Serbian friend Janko Tipsarevic were victorious in doubles yesterday beating Mark Knowles and Philipp Petzschner 5-7, 6-3, 12-10.

Rafael Nadal and his Spanish compatriot Marc Lopez were as fortunate losing to Tomas Berdych and Florian Mayer 6-3, 7-6(5).

Roger Federer and Nadal will play their first singles matches on Wednesday.

In Toronto, Kim Clijsters will test her ankle and play her first match since mid-June against Zheng Jie. Stanford winner Serena Williams opens here Canadian campaign against Alona Bondarenko. Ana Ivanovic and new Top 10er Andrea Petkovic are also scheduled.

Tennis Channel has live coverage of matches from both Toronto and Montreal today.

65 Comments for Novak Djokovic Receives No. 1 Trophy, Plays Davydenko Tonight; Clijsters Returns [Video]

Brando Says:

Well deserved novak! Getting the mens no.1 ranking must be one of the hardest things to achieve in all sports when you consider what djokovic has had to do in order to achieve it. And it wasn’t exactly a walk in the park for nadal, federer before him either.

skeezerweezer Says:

Congrats to Novak. It was a wild 2011 ride to #1, and did it the hard way, by thumping the past #1 repeatedly to do it. Go Novak!

alison hodge Says:

rep brando i agree with everything you said, now comes the true test, building on that sucess, and been able to stay number 1,i do like nole, but like you im a rafa fan,so hopefully rafa will regain the number 1 ranking at some point, however the more grand slams rafa wins i probably wont care anymore,it would be nice on the womens side to see world number 1 wozniaki challenged by a williams sister or one of the top girls,to test her metal, and see how worthy she is of that number 1 ranking also.

Brando Says:

Re Alison hodge right now the difference between top 2 is a 1,060 points. If it stays that way until aus 2012, rafa could get it back. By winning the championship

jane Says:

“Djokovic… will play his first match as a No. 1 tonight against former Top 5 Nikolay Davydenko.”

In a way, his first match as No. 1 was versus Rafa in the Wimbledon final, since he had cinched it with his win over Tsonga in the semis. But technically it didn’t change until the following Monday, so this match with Davy really will be his first as first.

It would be nice to see him hold onto number 1 for a little while, maybe until early next year when he has to start defending the streak. Then it will be very difficult, but by then he’ll’ve held it for over half a year, which would be good.

Humble Rafa Says:

Jane,

Why set a low bar for the Djoker. I mean, he can’t defend everything next year or what?

He is not Rafa. I think he can defend a few titles from time to time.

jane Says:

H.R., I think a low bar would be Novak not being able to end the year with it. He has gone 48-1 on the season as everyone knows: so yeah, to be honest, I don’t think he can defend eveything. And pretty much the only place he can add points is winning the FO, or playing an extra event like Monte Carlo or Doha or something. I am just being realistic.

Kimberly Says:

Humble Rafa-last time I checked Rafa defended Montecarlo 6 times in a row? Am I missing something?

Kimberly Says:

7 consecutive titles, thats 1-2-3-4-5-6-7

jane Says:

^ That’s stellar! And Rafa has pretty much owned the clay season for several years too, so he defends alright! Lol!

Brando Says:

@jane, I think beig realistic is the best approach regarding the no.1 ranking also. Because nadal, djokovic are at a similar age, stage in career I cannot see either one of them being no .1 for a whole calender year. When you add Murray, del potro into the equation then it seems impossible.

marko Says:

Murray already got knocked out?? What a disappointment!! Can Rafa’s draw possibly get any easier??

Brando Says:

WTF!!! Murray Knocked out 6-3 6-1! I honestly believed that he would trouble djokovic this USO series. What is gonna happen with this guy? Very inconsistent and when the big moments arrive at a grand slam, well……. TRAGIC:-(

skeezerweezer Says:

Heart goes out to margot today :(. C’mon Andy! WTF?

dari Says:

yes, condolences to dear margot!
let’s just take jane’s silver lining, ok? :)

Brando Says:

Condolences from myself also margot. You’re the most enthusiastic Murray supporter here and deserve better from your guy. Really don’t know what it is with this guy. Only possible thing is that maybe he was caught cold after 5 weeks off. But even then this is inexcusable !

alison hodge Says:

humble rafa for someone who dislikes his namesake, you really do spend a heck of a lot of time talking about him,i mean what is it you have against this guy,or maybe your jealous,i dont know what it is,but i think you have serious problems,as you seem to be obsessed with the guy.

van orten Says:

guys lets hope the fed landing on rafas side of the draw at flushing…them batteling it out to play the number one player of the world the djoker…
murray will be a factor though dont read to much into that what happened today

alison hodge Says:

humble rafa correct me if im wrong but didnt rafa win 4 french opens in a row between 2005 and 2008, retain the title in 2010 and defend it this year, for someone whos so obsessed with the guy,you really should check your facts a little more carefully,as you seem to know very little.

Kimmi Says:

Murray muzz..what happened. 3 and 1. cant believe it.

Brando Says:

With Murray I think the best thing to do is have no expectation at all and hopefully something good will happen. I don’t think he has put together a run of 4 semi finals in a row in consecutive tournaments at least once in re last 2-3 years, and that is something that djokovic, nadal and federer have been doing quite easily. He’s just not in the same league

alison hodge Says:

rep kimmi i think murray was just under cooked, and had a bad day at the office,im sure he will bounce back next week at cincy,no need to panic,im sure this is just a minor set back, come the us open he will be fine.

Kimmi Says:

it always murray who has these bad spells. Other top players would lose first round but there will always be a fight :(

i don’t know what is happening,I hope he bounce back quickly. this time of the year is his best time. yes,cincy..i am waiting for that.

Brando Says:

@ kimmi, I also agree that this time of the year is also best for him. But he really needs to develop an aura about him. I just feel that the other players at times lose before they go on to the court with djokovic and nadal, federer also in the past. But Murray is someone they always fancy their chances against. His game has always been more than good enough, but he needs to sort his mind out.

Kimmi Says:

this bondarenko is making serena look too good.

Kimberly Says:

serena picking up where she left off.

Kimmi Says:

bagel for serena

Kimberly Says:

bagel. williams unplayable.

jane Says:

What’s happening in Montreal with the men’s: when I left it was 1 all Isner and Baggy. Rain?

jane Says:

Bondarenko can’t even get the balls over the net over what?!

Kimmi Says:

Rain in montreal now.

Kimmi Says:

bondarenko about to hold..yay! c’mon bondarenko give us a match

jane Says:

Thanks Kimmi. Well I hope they get to play tonight.

Kimmi Says:

what is this green, black and white stripes..to me these colours don’t match very well

Kimmi Says:

shahar peer loses 1 and 0 to wozniak. Well bonderenko should not feel too bad. she isnt the only one.

Kimmi Says:

It doesn’t look good in montreal. they said they are waiting for the announcement.

jane Says:

Nice to see Bondarenko at least trying to bounce back from the first set shellacking. Serena’s serve has gone off though.

jane Says:

Kimmi, does that mean Djoko, Davy, Delpo, Cillic, Isner and Baggy would have to play 2 matches tomorrow!? And Nole is in doubles too. Not good.

Kimmi Says:

I don’t know jane. they just show a little bit what is happening there and its still pouring. we just have to wait and hear what they say.

tennis can be played till some strange hrs in the morning, no?

Serena going off the boil.

Kimmi Says:

even if djoko does not play today, it wont be two matches tomorrow. federer and rafa hasn’t played, yet why would he play two?

jane Says:

Don’t know. Ha ha. Just know that once they start these Masters it seems to be one match a day.

jane Says:

Serena to serve it out…3 games is all Bondarenko could get. Better than a double bagel though.

Kimmi Says:

Julia goerges and serena next. hope it is a good match, I am talking to you Julia.

dari Says:

i’ll never think of rain delays again after that match in dc.
does anyone know what happened in the isner baghdatis match?

Kimmi Says:

I am trying to post but cant see my comments after submitting them..weird!!

Kimmi Says:

OK, what i wanted to say is, they just announced.

Montreal is officially cancelled for today.

Kimmi Says:

OK, go kim!!

Kimmi Says:

This is a tough match for kim..hope she can get through.

dari Says:

thanks for update kimmi

Kimmi Says:

Kim sooo rusty..double fault after double fault. not looking good.

jane Says:

Thanks Kimmi. That’s too bad, but go Kim!

Kimmi Says:

Kim is returning well, it is the serving that has been a problem. c’mon now!

Kimmi Says:

good game to hold.

Kimmi Says:

oh no! Kim has an injury. abdomen? she already has a tape on the left side of her abdomen, hmmm. Hope it is not serious.

Dan Martin Says:

Murray? Goodness. He seems to have hangovers from tough losses at slams. I can’t say that I blame him. I think most ordinary people take time to recover from heartbreak. Still, getting to the top is an extraordinary pursuit and mentally he may not get there. We’ll see how he plays in Cincy.

Kimmi Says:

Kim just retired..oh no!

dari Says:

oh, kim!
she should probably just be done for good.
body is not cooperating, but good on her to always keep trying

Kimmi Says:

stomach muscles! that explains with the serve 6 DF. So unlucky for Kim. Well, serena has it easy at least..not that she needed it.

jane Says:

Crappy for Kim. :(

Kimmi Says:

federer opens up tomorrow at 12 pm. packed up day of tennis, hope there is no rain to disrupt play.

Michael Says:

It has been a long wait for Djokovic to demolish the duopoly of the Federer-Nadal era. He has achieved what he had wanted. The highlight of his achievement is beating Nadal five consecutive times in big tournament finals on different Courts, which is more than winning a grand slam. I hope Djokovic continues his winning streak from now onwards and his major test will be at the US Open. But considering the form he is in at the moment, he is tipped to win the coveted trophy missing in his cabinet.

margot Says:

jane, dari, skeeze, Brando:
Thanx so much! “Upset”, his and mine doesn’t quite cut it :(
So inconsistent, such a mental wally…I dunno.
Brando u r right, best to have NO expectation whatsoever and then be pleasantly surprised when he beats some 50 year old…….:(
Meanwhile, now hope Tomic wins whole thing …:)
