Robredo, Chela, Delic Win; Federer Gets Revenge Match Today Against CanasPosted on March 27, 2007 Today at the Sony Ericsson Miami top seed and World No. 1 Roger Federer will earn a chance at revenge against Guillermo Canas, the man who ended his 41-match win streak two weeks at Indian Wells. "I had to be very concentrated today, because I knew from the start he's a really big hitter," Federer said of the match. "It was windy out there, and I'm still kind of looking to come back into the rhythm after not having many matches in the last couple of weeks." Federer, who is chasing a third consecutive title in Miami, Monday defeated Nicolas Almagro 7-5, 6-3, dropping just five points on his first serve. During his reign as ATP World No. 1 Federer has not lost to the same player twice, except for Rafael Nadal. Canas, who is one of three qualifiers (Delic, Lopez) to reach the fourth round, defeated French 15th seed Richard Gasquet 7-6(3), 6-3 yesterday. The Argentine has a winning match record (2-1) against Federer, having also beaten the Swiss in Toronto in 2002 en route to winning the title. Sixth seed Tommy Robredo reached the fourth round in Miami for the second time (2004) by defeating German Florian Mayer 6-4, 6-4. Finn Jarkko Nieminen won a 14-minute, nine-deuce game on his serve late in his match against David Nalbandian to set up an upset 6-4, 7-6 win. Nieminen, the only Finnish player to win an ATP title, next faces No. 7 seed and 2006 finalist Ivan Ljubicic. The Croat rallied from a set down to defeat Fabrice Santoro 3-6, 6-3, 6-4 in a riveting match. Ljubicic served 11 aces. Argentine Juan Ignacio Chela improved to 19 wins and five losses on the season after upsetting 14th-seeded Czech Tomas Berdych 6-4, 7-6(6). Chela is looking to advance to his fifth consecutive quarterfinal. He has won 10 of his past 11 matches dating back to his title run in Acapulco. Qualifier Amer Delic earned his biggest win of his career with his first Top 10 win on Monday over No. 4 Nikolay Davydenko of Russia 7-6(5), 6-3, to advance to the fourth round. Davydenko held four set points when serving at 5-4 in the opening set but Delic battled back to break for the first time. He went up 4-2 in the tie-break and held on to win 7-5. "This was great," said Delic, who now meets Chela. "Especially playing in front of my family here. My dad is down here, and a lot of the friends that I've met throughout the years here because, I used to train here with the USTA, Key Biscayne Center, and friends from college that stayed here. So I would stay with them, just crashed with them while I was practicing here. So it's great to play in front of them and actually win." |
