Blake Leads U.S. Against Chile in Team CupPosted on May 21, 2007 The U.S. plays Chile on Centre Court 1 Monday, with James Blake facing Fernando Gonzalez and Mardy Fish taking on Nicolas Massu. On Centre Court 2, the Czech Republic plays Spain, with Tomas Berdych meeting David Ferrer and Jan Hajek battling Bartolome Salva-Vidal. First up on Centre Court 1 are Gonzalez, No. 5 in the ATP Rankings, vs. No. 8 Blake. Gonzalez holds a 4-3 edge in their prior meetings. Gonzalez, 26, reached his second final of the year two weeks ago at Rome (l. to Nadal). He also was runner-up at the Australian Open in January (l. to Federer). For those two events, his record is 10-2. For the rest of the year he is only 8-7. He did make the quarterfinals of Hamburg last week (l. to Nadal). Blake, 27, opened the season 12-2, but since then has gone only 9-8. He defended his crown at Sydney in January (d. Moya) and reached the final at Delray Beach in February (l. to Malisse). His best result on clay was a semifinal finish at Houston last month (l. to Zabaleta). He is 5-4 overall on clay in 2007. Also on Centre Court 1, Fish, ranked No. 31, plays No. 49 Massu. They are tied at 1-1 in prior meetings. Fish, 25, is 1-3 on clay this year. He started 2007 strong, going 12-4, but since then he is only 1-4. He has reached two semifinals this year: at Auckland in January (l. to Ferrer) and at Memphis in February (l. to Haas). Fish made it to his first Grand Slam quarterfinal at the Australian Open in January (l. to Roddick). Massu, 27, is 11-9 on clay this year, 12-13 overall. He was runner-up at Vina del Mar in February (l. to Horna) and reached the third round at Rome this month (l. to Gonzalez). His sole hard court win came in his first tournament of the year – at Auckland (d. Ferrero). On Centre Court 2, Berdych, ranked No. 12, opens play against No. 14 Ferrer. The duo are knotted at 2-2 in prior matches. Berdych, 21, is 12-5 on clay this year, 19-11 overall. In three consecutive weeks starting April 15, he reached the semifinals of Monte Carlo (l. to Nadal), the semifinals of Munich (l. to Youzhny) and the quarterfinals of Rome (l. to Volandri). His best hard court result was a quarterfinal showing at Sydney in January (l. to Melzer). Ferrer, 25, won the third title of his career at Auckland in January (d. Robredo). He is 9-4 on clay this year. He reached the semifinals at Barcelona last month (l. to Nadal) and the quarterfinals at Hamburg last week (l. to Federer). Ferrer also lost to Federer in the quarterfinals at Monte Carlo last month. Also on Centre Court 2, Hajek, ranked No. 101, faces No. 394 Salva-Vidal for the first time. Hajek, 23, has played eight of his 14 career ATP/Davis Cup matches this year, losing all eight. His career ATP/Davis Cup record is 2-12. He did reach the final of a Challenger – one level below the ATP – last month. Salva-Vidal, 20, is 0-2 in ATP competition this year, 0-3 for his career. He plays primarily Futures events, two levels below the ATP. He has won two Futures tournaments this year and was runner-up in another. |
