2024 French Open Day 4: Swiatek v Osaka, Sinner v Gasquet; Gauff, Alcaraz Also On Court
Two tantalizing matches will be on back-to-back on Chatrier Wednesday for the start of the second round at the French Open.
Iga Swiatek takes on Naomi Osaka in match-up of the two women with the most Grand Slam titles in the draw. The two have split two prior meetings both on hardcourts with Swiatek winning 2022 Miami and Osaka 2019 Canada.
“She’s a great person, and her game style is pretty fun to watch as well,” Swiatek said of Osaka.
“I haven’t actually played against Naomi obviously on clay, so we’ll see how that’s gonna go. We need to prepare tactically, for sure. But all these matches that we played on hard court were always really intense and tough. So I’m just glad that she came back and she’s, you know, playing more tournaments even than before the break.”
French veteran Richard Gasquet will try to work some magic against the Australian Open champion Jannik Sinner. Sinner is ahead of Gasquet 2-0 in their tour-level battles. Sinner took their most recent collision in the R32 at 2023 Halle.
“I’ve played him twice,” Gasquet said Sunday. “Two excellent matches. Three sets I played on grass in Halle, and then Indian Wells I played him. Two good matches I must say, but he is stronger than I am, of course, but I played well.
“So I hope that it’s going to be a big event for me. It’s incredible to be on the central court here. To play against Sinner is exceptional. So I’ll try and make the most of it and enjoy this great opportunity that I’m given because I’m on the central court. I’ll be on the central court, and this player is amazing, exceptional.”
No. 3 Carlos Alcaraz will battle Jesper De Jong in a first-time tour-level meeting. No. 6 Andrey Rublev clashes with Pedro Martinez, No. 8 Hubert Hurkacz will challenge Brandon Nakashima, No. 9 Stefanos Tsitsipas will meet Daniel Altmaier, No. 10 Grigor Dimitrov draws Fabian Marozsan and No. 15 Ben Shelton battles veteran Kei Nishikori.
The women’s draw will also see two former French Open finalists with Coco Gauff and Sofia Kenin, who face Tamara Zidansek and Caroline Garcia, respectively.
Also, Wimbledon winner and former finalist Marketa Vondrousova clashes with Katie Volynets, No. 8 Ons Jabeur battles Camila Osorio, former champion Jelena Ostapenko faces Clara Tauson and the red-hot Danielle Collins faces Olga Danilovic.
Rain, unfortunately, is forecasted to return again.
