With the second round still unfinished and rains resuming Monday at the Shanghai Masters, the tournament had to make use of two auxiliary practice courts to get play finished, and they did it.

Flavio Cobolli won the match of the day knocking out Stan Wawrinka 6-7(6), 7-6(4), 6-3 to advance. The lone break came during a game in which the chair and both players lost track of the score!

Cobolli moves on to face Novak Djokovic who has had a full two days off.

Taylor Fritz put away Terrance Atmane, Frances Tiafoe also won as did Grigor Dimitrov and Lorenzo Musetti was upset by David Goffin.

Holger Rune rallied from a set down to defeat Matteo Berrettini 4-6, 6-4, 6-3.

Tomorrow, the last of the 12 third round matches — including some that were not played Monday — are on the docket with first meeting between Djokovic and Cobolli.

“I guess the older I’m getting, more new players I’m going to play, because they keep on coming up, which is normal part of the evolution of the sport,” Djokovic said after his second round win over Alex Michelson.

Plus Alexander Zverev takes on Tallon Griekspoor and Rune faces Jiri Lehecka.

We could have had a contest of the Dinosaurs. Stan the solid old triceratops vs. aging velociraptor Novak.
But some fast rising Italian mammalian, Flavio Cobilli, took down Stan the dinosaur, now he faces Djokovic as the 3rd rated Italian man, up to #30 in rankings, and just made it to the QFs in Beijing.
This guy is no walkover type. Novak better come to play, or the Cretaceous Era ends in Beijing.
The young mammal has youth and 22 Earth years vs. the 75 collective years the dinos facing him bring…

The other half of Fedal retires.
Sad day but not surprised.
Thanks for the memories Rafa, what a fantastic career!

Madmax Says:

Skeezer! Where are you posting this? I was trying to find a thread!

This will do, I guess – until Sean catches up:

From The Mighty Fed:

“What a career, Rafa! I always hoped this day would never come,” wrote Federer. “Thank you for the unforgettable memories and all your incredible achievements in the game we love. It’s been an absolute honour.””

Madmax Says:

I am sooooooo sad to read this but it was on the cards for quite some time. I have a feeling Mr. Federer will make his way to Spain, wherever he is and celebrate with The Mighty Rafa.

How blessed have we been to live these moments, over the years, with these two very fine gentlemen of tennis?

#alltimegreats

I knew this was on the cards , a sad day for tennis indeed, two of the most loved players to ever play the game, gone but not forgotten, thanks for the memories Rafael Nadal you will be missed so much, enjoy your retirement, spend time with your lovely family, Xisca and Rafa junior xx👨‍👩‍👦🤗

Yes, we are in for another round of hand-holding and tears, it will be so sad :)

Anyway, getting back to tennis, Novak seems to be playing at a very high level! How is he doing this given his age and given so little match play compared to previous years?

Will he be eligible to play in Turin? Can he possibly take yet another World Final? Surely not at his age.

I guess clean living and a careful diet pays off!

By Carlos losing in the QFs, Sinner is now a mathematical lock for year end #1, according to tennisworld. So congrats in all his hard work and pushing himself to play so many events and for all his memorable matches so far.

Richard Gasquet is retiring in Paris. Really graceful player, a one handed backhand that some thought looked better than even Federer’s. So bye to Richard as well as Rafa. Another credit to the game and to French for the players and the fan love they bring to the sport.

Angelique Kerber just retired as well. 3 Majors, two won against Serena, 2016 Olympic silver medalist. Checked out of the WTA Oct 1st. Fine player, seemed personable and enjoying her play and her life in a way fans like. Had a kid in 2023, did a comeback with some successes, but she couldn’t get close to the level she was at before. Off for more family life and maybe more kids.
