Leading the way is No. 2 and 2005 Madrid champion Rafael Nadal who'll face Marcos Baghdatis, No. 3 and five-time ATP title winner this year Novak Djokovic who meets Fernando Verdasco and No. 5 and 2006 Madrid runner-up Fernando Gonzalez. All six matches on Pista Central involve a Spaniard, including two all-countrymen match-ups with No. 7 David Ferrer vs. local wild card Feliciano Lopez, and No. 14 Carlos Moya against 2003 Madrid winner Juan Carlos Ferrero (both former No. 1s). The top two Frenchmen in the South African Airways ATP Rankings, No. 12 Richard Gasquet and No. 21 Paul-Henri Mathieu, also square off. BAGHDATIS FASTFACTS Two-time runner-up, at Marseille (l. to Simon), Halle (l. to Berdych in first grass court final). One-time semifinalist, at Munich (l. to Kohlschreiber). Four-time quarterfinalist, incl. Wimbledon (fell to Djokovic in five set marathon). Fourth round finish at Roland Garros (l. to Andreev) and three third rounds (all AMS events). His only non-clay court title this year came at AMS Indian Wells, his fifth career hardcourt title and breaking a 12-tournament drought (hadn’t won a title since 2006 Roland Garros). Two-time runner-up, at Hamburg (l. to Federer; see above) and Wimbledon (l. to Federer). Two-time semifinalist, at Chennai (l. to Malisse) and AMS Canada (l. to Djokovic).
